Features & Benefits

Features

SparkoDan provides

  • Energy to nurse the sow and keep warm
  • Immunoglobulins which protect the piglets
  • Nutrition and protective bioactive substances to the gut
  • Lower motality during nursery
  • Supplement to the sow's colostrum and not replacement

Small, weak and cold piglets often have difficulties to start nursing the sow and are in risk of receiving to little colostrum from the sow. These piglets need an extra supplement otherwise they are in risk of dying or have poor performance all the way to slaughter.

Product Highlights

Liquid colostrum-based starting aid for weak newborn piglets

  • SparkoDan is a practical, economical starting aid for weak newborn piglets to start nursing the sow. It is also used in case of equalization of litters and cross-fostering or as a supplement to the last born piglets in large litters.
  • SparkoDan have a high content of bovine colostrum and supllies energy, essential nutrients and vital antibodies. I has the same nutritent composition as sow colostrum.
  • The purpose of SparkoDan is to save as many piglets as possible and thereby reduce the mortality rate in the nursing stable. This is achieved by a relatively modest economical effort compared with the potential profit.
Why is colostrum important for the newborn?

Piglets are born without antibodies in the blood as the sow’s placenta is not permeable to antibodies. Therefore it is essential for the piglet to receive antibodies through the colostrum. Immediately after birth, the piglets intestinal cells are permeable to large molecules and can absorb immunoglobulins from their own species or from other species. After approximately 24-36 hours the intestine closes so the intestinal cells no longer let large molecules pass.

The closure of the intestine protects the piglet against harmful substances that can invade and infect the piglet. After the intestinal closure the antibodies will have a local protective effect in the gut, where the intestinal mucosa is protected. It is therefore important that the piglet drinks a sufficient amount of colostrum in time to obtain immunological protection, until the piglet’s own immune system has matured. The colostrum intake protects the piglet against infections in the first weeks, whereafter its own immune system is built up to the age of 8 weeks.

The first energy

Piglets are born with small energy reserves that can cover the piglet’s needs for energy for approx. 16 hours. It is important that the piglet drinks colostrum before the energy reserves are empty. Colostrum supplies the piglets with energy for thermoregulation (keeping warm), energy for growth and growth factors that stimulate intestinal growth and intestinal maturation.

It is important that the piglet gets to the udder and drinks colostrum in order to get energy to keep warm, otherwise it is at risk of dying of cold or to be crushed by the sow in an attempt to keep warm.

Long term effects of colostrum

A high colostrum intake in the first 24 hours after birth has long term effects for the piglet. The immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentration day 1 is positively correlated to the IgGconcentration at weaning, and the passive immunization after birth has an effect on the immune status at weaning.

If the piglet has a suboptimal intake of colostrum, the risk of infections is increased after birth, but also after weaning. The colostrum intake has an effect on daily weight gain, and a higher colostrum intake results in a higher weaning weight and a higher daily weight gain after weaning.

If the piglet drinks no or too little colostrum, the mortality increases significantly, and if the piglet survives it will have a lower daily weight gain both before and after weaning. The amount of colostrum has not increased at the same rate as the number of liveborn piglets, and the last piglets of the litter are at risk of receiving too little colostrum. Therefore, a supplement may be necessary to ensure that all piglets receive sufficient colostrum and thereby lower the mortality in the farrowing section.

Applications & Uses

Animal Species
Application
  • SparkoDan is administered to weak newborn piglets as soon as possible after farrowing, and then when needed.
  • It can also be used in case of cross-fostering and nursing sows, or as a supplement for the last-born piglets of large litters.
Dosage

2 pump strokes (4 ml) per piglet to weak piglets as soon as possible after farrowing. Can be repeated if needed.

Before usage

SparkoDan should be fed at 20-25 °C. If necessary, warm up the bottle in a water bath. Shake the bottle. Mount the short tube on the pump nuzzle and the long tube at the bottom of the pump. Mount the pump on the bottle.

Dosage
2 pump strokes (= approx. 4 ml) per piglet per dose.

After usage
Clean the pump before attaching it on a new bottle. The bottle should be used within 14 days after opening.

How does SparkoDan® work?
  • Sparkodan is a liquid starting aid with a high content of colostrum that helps the weak newborn piglet to start nursing the sow.
  • It is essential that piglets suckle shortly after birth as the sow only produces colostrum during the first 24 hours. It is the piglet’s most important meal in its life as it provides the piglet with energy for growth, contributes passively to its immune system and contains vital bioactive substances that help to develop and mature the intestine. Read more about the immune system under Immune
  • Often the weakest piglets have difficulty suckling and therefore may fail to take in an adequate amount of colostrum. Here SparkoDan comes into the picture - SparkoDan can help the weak piglets as it provides energy and protective bioactive substances until they can suckle at the udder.
  • SparkoDan contains immunoglobulins from bovine colostrum. Research shows that the bioactive substances of bovine colostrum, the main content of SparkoDan, are not species-specific and can be fed to both calves, piglets and infants. Thus, SparkoDan has a high content of bovine colostrum that has been adjusted in such a manner that it has the same nutrient composition as the sow’s colostrum. This ensures that the piglets get the correct supplement.

IUGR-piglets

  • With growing litter sizes, the number of small piglets and IUGR (Intra Uterine Growth Restricted) piglets has increased.
  • The IUGR-piglets have been exposed to undernutrition during their fetal life, and the nutrients have been redirected to the brain and heart. They are recognizable by their dolphin-like heads that is larger in proportion to the rest of their body. Furthermore, they have wrinkles around the mouth, and hair with no direction of growth.
  • These piglets are under-develped at birth and have lower energy reserves. Moreorver, they have a higher heatloss and have lower mobility at birth compared to normal piglets in the litter.
  • The colostrum intake of IUGR-piglets is lower than the recommended 200 ml. These piglets need an extra supplement in order to survice and can with advantage be supplemented with SparkoDan.

More than just a starting aid

The amount of colostrum which the sow produces has not increased at the same rate at the number of liveborn piglets and therefore it is important to focus on the colostrum management to ensure that all piglets receive enough colostrum. It can be necessary to supplement the sow colostrum and, in that case SparkoDan will be a good solution due to the hight content of colostrum.

The colostrum in the SparkoDan contains

  • Immunoglobulins - which stimulate and balance the immune system
  • Peptides - which have antibacterial and antiviral effects
  • Natural growth factors - which contributes to intestinal development and healing of damaged cells.
  • Prebiotic factors - which stimulate the intestinal microbiota
SparkoDan® Application

Weak and cold piglets

SparkoDan can be used for weak, small and cold piglets, who need an extra energy supply to start suckling the sow.

Identify the weak piglets

Each time you identify a weak piglet during your inspection round, give it a dose of SparkoDan. It is important to administer SparkoDan as soon as possible after birth if the piglets are weak.

Give 2 pump strokes

Insert the tube into the mouth of the piglet and place two pump strokes (4 ml) in the back of the oral cavity. I necessary, make a break between the two pump stokes.

Color code

With a color code the piglet is easy to find again if there is need for further administration. In that case, preferably within 1-2 hours for the best result

Nurse sow

When you create a nursing sow for newborn piglets, you can advantageously give the piglets 2 pump strokes before they are transferred to the new sow. If necessary, repeat after 3-5 hours.

Runt piglets

When you create a nursing sow for runt piglets, you can advantageously give these piglets SparkoDan 2-3 times the first day. The dose should be adjusted according to hunger and size.

At the end of the day

At the end of the day, you can press the plastic case from a syringe into the tube so the product left in the tube does not dry out.

Technical Details & Test Data

Research in Colostrum

the piglets were fed either bovine colostrum or milk replacer. The premature piglets can physiologically be equated with IUGR-piglets. The experiment showed that piglets that were given colostrum had

  • A better developed immune system.
  • Better intestinal health, with longer villi, more digestive enzymes and a higher nutrient uptake.
  • Less diarrhea and lower NEC-score (Necrotizing enterocolitis, inflammation/ damage in the intestine).
  • Higher daily gain and were more active.
