Why Primer Is Used

Why Primer Is Used

In most cases a successful solvent cement joint can be made without using a primer/cleaner. But, if you want to increase probability of making a successful joint, using a primer/cleaner is the thing to do. Purple Primer accomplishes two things. First, it will clean the pipe and fittings of any dirt, oil, grease and other foreign matter. If the plastic is dirty before making a connection it will be more difficult for the cement to bond the pipe and fitting together. Second, Purple Primer will soften the plastic. This allows the cement the opportunity of skipping a step (softening the plastic) and to go immediately to the process of fusing the pipe and fitting together. Note - softening the plastic in cold weather is especially important because it will noticeably speed up the process of making a solvent cement joint. Using Purple Primer is always recommended to make a good connection. And remember, in most locations using a primer/cleaner is mandatory according to local codes.

Why Purple?

Using a "clear" primer makes it impossible for any inspector to determine whether a primer has been used. Because of this the market place has called for a primer that has a purple color. In this way an inspector can see the purple color on the pipe and fittings and can know for sure that a primer has been used.

What To Do If Purple Primer Is Spilled

DIRECTIONS

Store below 110oF (44oC). Use only on PVC and CPVC plastic. Use within 2 years of date stamped on bottom of can. Read Black Swan Product Bulletin and GHS.

  • Cut pipe square and deburr. Clean and dry joining surfaces.
  • Check dry fit. Fitting should go over end of pipe easily but become tight about 1/3 to 2/3 of the way on.
  • Use a suitable applicator at least 1⁄2 the size of the pipe diameter; for larger sizes use brush or roller. Do not use a rag as repeated contact with skin may cause irritation or blistering.
  • Apply primer to inside of fitting equal to socket depth; without delay, coat pipe and end up to socket depth until soft. Apply again to fitting socket. Avoid puddling.
  • On bell-end pipe, do not coat or allow primer to run beyond socket depth.
  • To check penetration, scratch surface. Recoat if necessary. Actual time for priming action is affected by pipe diameter and temperature.
  • Immediately while surfaces are still wet, apply appropriate Black Swan cement following directions on cement can.
