Procedure

The following is a general outline for an alkaline purge procedure using AquaPurge. Circumstances, however, may dictate that these procedures be modified due to unforeseen conditions.

  • Dump all tanks, flush out and remove most of the bottom sludge. Nozzles and screens should be removed and cleaned only if conditions of plugging are extremely severe. Otherwise, it saves time and man hours to allow the Aqua- Purge to dissolve the residue.
  • Fill tanks two-thirds full with water and, with the pumps running charge with a 20% solution of Aqua-Purge.
  • Making sure the heating means are covered, heat to 140° to 160° F. When the solution temperature reaches 120° F, circulate at the two-thirds level for about one hour. Then fill each tank the rest of the way with water and continue circulating for at least another 4 or 5 hours. Note: This method will temporarily provide more strength for rapid penetration, and then a more dilute concentration as bare metal begins to be exposed
  • Dump the purge solution, draining the tanks as completely as possible, hose out spray chambers and tanks, and refill with clean water.
  • Remove caps from the spray piping, unplug nozzles and jog the pumps on and off several times to surge out any remaining loose scale and or sludge. To increase pressure and facilitate good flushing, unplug the nozzles and remove the caps from only 1⁄4 to 1⁄3 of the spray arches at a time. Circulate for one hour.
  • Dump tanks, flush out and remove any bottom sludge. Reposition all piping and nozzles for proper spray pattern.
  • Fill with fresh water and condition with current plant process cleaner at 4% by volume and circulate for one hour.
  • Dump and recharge tanks for production as outlined in the appropriate standard operating procedure.
  • This completes the washer purge. For best results, the Aqua-Purge solution should be circulated for a minimum of 6-8 hours and maintained at 160° F. If build up is severe or higher temperatures cannot be achieved, it is recommend that purge time be increased to 12-24 hours.
The length of time necessary to complete the entire procedure will depend a great deal on the time required for tanks to drain, fill and heating of solutions. Generally speaking, if the quantity of scale build up is not overly excessive, the job can usually be completed by two men in 8 to 12 hours.
