Mode of Action

Essential fatty acids are generally called Vitamin F, even though they do not correspond to the classical definition of vitamins.

Among the polyunsaturated fatty acids, apart from linolenic acid, particularly linoleic acid is of great importance. Linoleic acid is found in natural plant oils mostly as tryglycerides, namely with two non-conjugated double bonds in cis-9 and cis-12 formation. Rearrangement induced by oxidation may lead to formation of the conjugated 9,11 form with either cis-trans or trans-trans isomers.

Essential fatty acids have significant physiological functions, e.g. they influence the energy balance, synthesis of immunocompetent messengers, structure of the lipid barrier of the Stratum Corneum as well as the structure of the cell membranes.

Deficiency of essential fatty acids leads to a number of negative consequences which are a challenge for cosmetics:

• dry and scaling skin

• increased transepidermal water loss (TEWL)

• hypertrophy of sebaceous glands and hyperkeratosis

• weakened capillary vessels

• thin, brittle hair and loss of hair

• influence on skin diseases, such as acne, atopic dermatitis and psoriasis

These deficiency symptoms have been reviewed by Horrobin (J. Am. Acad. Dermatol. [1989],20, 1045-1053) und Wright (Br. J. Dermatol. [1991], 125, 503-515).

Recommended Uses

Vitamin F forte is designed for application to dry, seborrhoic skin with disturbed lipid barrier as well as for dry scalps with brittle and shineless hair. It can be used in emulsified and oily skin and hair care preparations, and alcoholic sprays.

Processing
  • Due to its content of saturated fatty acids, Vitamin F forte produces turbidity at temperatures below approx. 16 °C, but yields completely clear solutions again if warmed to temperatures above. Short heating, as required for the manufacture of emulsified products, should be done under vacuum or inert gas in order to prevent induction of oxidative processes. An adequate amount of antioxidant should be added to formulations containing Vitamin F forte, since the tocopherol contained in this product is diluted by the lipid phase and thus does not provide complete protection.

Safety & Health

Physiological Safety

Acute oral toxicity

Vitamin F forte differs from the previous version only as regards fatty acid distribution. Both products consist of vegetable oils without any additives. The acid value as an indicator of the non-esterified, free fatty acids is within the same range. Consequently, it is not necessary to re-conduct animal tests in order to evaluate the acute oral toxicity of this product.

LD50 according to Litchfield and Wilcoxon in rats: greater than 5 ml per kg body weight. Vitamin F forte [CLR] is hence to be designated as non-toxic.

Eye irritation potential

Vitamin F forte, at 10% in soybean oil, was tested on the chorioallantoic membrane of the hen's egg where it produced a calculated irritation score of 0.02 and therefore could be classified as "non-irritant".

Skin tolerance

Human patch test (primary irritation test): A gel containing 10 % Vitamin F forte, tested on 50 volunteers for 48 hours, produced no reactions and therefore could be classified as "harmless" as regards its skin irritating potential.

Packaging & Availability

Packaging
  • Available pack sizes: 5 kg; 25 kg
  • Sample size: 50 g

Storage & Handling

Storage And Handling

If kept in a cool place (10 – 20 °C), protected from light, in well-closed containers, Vitamin F
forte is stable for at least 1 year. Product packs should be fully used once opened.
If exposed to cold temperatures turbidity may occur; this process can be reversed by slight
heating and does not influence the quality of the product.

Preservative System

Stabilized with a natural tocopherol concentrate as antioxidant.
