Coating Place Encap-LT

Encap-LT is an encapsulated oxidizer for use as a delayed release breaker in hydraulic fracturing applications. Encap-LT slowly releases ammonium persulfate breaker into the fracturing fluid, thus enabling a higher concentration of breaker to be used without fluid rheology being compromised.

Functions: Breaker, Oxidizing Agent

Chemical Family: Ammonium Salts, Sulfates

End Uses: Fracturing Fluids

Applicable Processes: Hydraulic Fracturing Applications

Features: Good Oxidation Property, Improves Conductivity, Low Temperature Handling Properties, Viscosity Stability

Synonyms: Ammonium peroxidodisulfate, Ammonium peroxydisulfate ((NH4)2S2O8), Ammonium peroxysulfate, Bis(ammonium) peroxodisulfate, Diammonium peroxydisulfate, Diammonium peroxydisulphate, Diammonium persulfate

Features & Benefits

Product Highlights
  • Encapsulated breakers delay the release of the active breaker material into the fracturing fluid to minimize the early effect of the breaker on the fluid. This delay allows breakers to be used in higher concentrations without compromising the fracturing fluids proppant transport capabilities.
  • The solid breaker will also be concentrated in the fractures and not be lost within the formation during fluid leak-off. These advantages combine to improve fracture conductivity of the created fracture by enhancing fluid clean-up. Encap-LT can be used in fracturing fluids with temperatures of < 140°F.
Advantages
  • Increased break times can be achieved.
  • Higher breaker concentrations can be used without compromising fluid viscosity during proppant placement.
  • Solid breaker will concentrate in the proppant pack and will not be lost in the formation during fluid leak-off.
  • Improves fracture conductivity by enhancing clean-up.

Applications
  • Gels are long chain polymers that fully hydrate in water when the proper pH is present. When hydrated the polymer unfolds into long hair-like structures to which water molecules become attached. These polymers are long chains with hundreds of sugar rings that are attached with oxygen bonds. Since these molecules are attached and can no longer move about freely in relation to other water molecules, they form clusters.
  • These clusters of polymer and water then move in a new relationship to other clusters causing a resistance to flow. Because of this new relationship of movement viscosity is increased substantially. After sand is injected into the fracture, the gel containing water must be displaced.
  • Encap-LT oxidizes the gel polymer allowing the oil and gas to flow more freely. The lower viscosity allows for a higher rate of return of the water used.
  • Encap-LT can be substituted for persulfate breakers currently in use. With any fracturing application, we recommend that break tests be conducted with the fluid formulations to determine the best possible concentration.
