Product Highlights

Settling of Liquid Fish Fertilizer

Drammatic Liquid Fish Fertilizer is a complex organic liquid that has a high amount of solids. During periods of un-agitated storage it is possible that solids in the hydrolysate may settle to the bottom of storage tanks. This is common and should be expected. Regular agitation of storage tanks is recommended and is necessary to maintain suspension of the fertilizer solids. Storage tanks that have been emptied and contain sediment should be rinsed thoroughly before adding more fertilizer to the storage tank.

Mold Growth

Air contains mold spores. Fish hydrolysate in storage tanks is exposed to air and mold spores will deposit onto the hydrolysate surface. Spores grow producing mycelium, which appears as scum on the surface of the fertilizer. Left un-touched the mycelium can grow quickly and become rather thick. The presence of mold does not indicate that there is anything wrong with the fertilizer. Thorough blending of the product will break up the mycelium and make the fertilizer ready for application. Dramm recommends filtering the fertilizer with at least a 50-mesh filter to prevent clogging.

Tank Contamination

Application and storage tanks may have dried material or scale on sides of tanks from previous liquids. The dry, scaly materials may flake off and contaminate any new liquid stored in the tanks. Dramm recommends thoroughly cleaning and rinsing all tanks before the addition of fertilizer.

Consistency of Fish Hydrolysate

Dramm strives to produce consistent Drammatic Liquid Fish Fertilizer. Throughout the year we obtain differing varieties of fish species that may contain more or less bone (calcium). When there is a larger ratio of bone in the fish hydrolysate the end product may be prone to thickening, or “gelling.” A gelled product may be more difficult to spray, so, at a minimum, weekly agitation is recommended.

Storage Conditions

Store in clean tanks with regular agitation and filter at time of transfer and prior usage.

Shelf Life
Drammatic Liquid Fish Fertilizer has a shelf life of two years when unopened.

Using the following hints will reduce any possible filter or spray nozzle clogging.

  1. Mix only what will be applied within 12 hours.
  2. Never store Drammatic Liquid Fish Fertilizer that has been mixed with water (diluted)
  3. Clean all mix / application tanks before filling with Drammatic Liquid Fish Fertilizer.
  4. Agitate or mix all tanks of Drammatic Liquid Fish Fertilizer before use.
  5. When filling sprayer from your holding tank, run Drammatic Liquid Fish Fertilizer through a 50-mesh filter. If mold is present the fertilizer should be filtered before use. The filter should be placed after the pump, or on the “push” side.

For long-term storage (over 5 days) :

  1. Never store Drammatic Liquid Fish Fertilizer that has been mixed with water (diluted).
  2. Store out of direct sun. Preferably under cover or in a shaded area.
  3. Cold temperatures, or freezing does not damage the fertilizer, but crystallization and precipitation of some fertilizer elements may occur. Regular agitation is recommended.
  4. For best results, agitate Drammatic Liquid Fish Fertilizer for 10 minutes daily or 20 minutes 2-3 times a week.

Consider Your Type of Storage System

  • Cone bottom tanks are the preferred storage system. Install a valve at the bottom of the cone and attach a coupler for an air hose. Attach the air hose and agitate regularly.
  • Flat bottom tanks require more management. Attach a pipe (1/2 inch in diameter) to a clean air supply.
  • Place the pipe into the bottom of the tank. Make sure the pipe is long enough to reach the entire bottom of the tank. Begin adding air (80 PSI recommended) and manually move the pipe around the bottom of the tank for 20 minutes until the fertilizer is thoroughly agitated.
  • 55 Gallon barrels require agitation prior to use. Agitate contents of 55 gallon barrels with a mechanical agitator. Dramm offers an attachment for a 3/8” power drill that can agitate a 55 gallon barrels. Contact Dramm to order (Item# HDMA-28).
  • Plastic 275 gallon IBC (intermediate bulk container) totes also require more management. Agitate contents of IBC totes with a mechanical agitator, or compressed air.
    • If you do not have a mechanical agitation device a clean paddle, or wooden board (like a 1”x 4” that is long enough to reach the inside corners of the tote). Manually agitate the fertilizer.
