Peel Away® 1 Heavy-Duty Paint Remover is the premier, industry-leading paint removal product formulated to remove up to 30 coats of lead, oil, and alkyd-based paints and coatings in a single application. Peel Away® 1 emulsifies the coating without need for sanding, eliminating the possibility of any dangerous lead airborne dust. Unlike other popular paint removers, Peel Away® 1 does not contain the dangerous chemicals methylene chloride or NMP, making it a much safer alternative for homeowners and professionals. This product is zero VOC, water-based, non-flammable, and biodegradable. Peel Away®1 is easily applied on interior and exterior wood, brick, stone, concrete, stucco, plaster, metal, steel, cast iron, fiberglass, carved and molded surfaces, and many more! All Peel Away® 1 containers contain a complete paint removal kit, including Dumond® Laminated Paper, Citri-Lize™ Neutralizer, a pH test kit, and a plastic applicator under the lid. Applications & Uses

Markets
Recommended Substrates

Before applying to any substrate, Dumond® always recommends performing a test with the product before a full-scale application. Recommended for use on wood, brick, stone, marble, terra cotta, granite, terrazzo, concrete, cement, stucco, plaster, metal, cast iron, steel, tin, copper, tile, enamel, clapboard, and slate.

Limitations

Peel Away® 1 is not recommended for use on fiberglass, veneer, plywood, drywall, aluminum, brownstone, sandstone, limestone, laminated glass, plexiglass, plastic, rubber, and EIFS. Peel Away® 1 will darken hardwoods. Not recommended to remove latex, epoxy, urethane, enamel, chlorinated rubber, cementitious coatings, basked finishes, and other high-performance coatings.

Surface Preparation

Prepare the surface by pressure washing or rinsing the substrate to remove any loose debris or coatings. Allow the substrate to dry before applying Peel Away® 1. Protect and cover all areas with plastic where use is not desired. For exterior applications, wet down all vegetation and cover with Dumond® Catch-N-Cover™, a strong breathable membrane designed to allow liquid to pass through while collecting debris and residue.

Surface and Air Temperature

Because Peel Away® 1 is water-based, the product can freeze and harden in colder temperatures and evaporate and harden in hotter, more humid temperatures. Peel Away® 1 is designed to be used in temperatures from 40° F to 90° F. The product can be applied in lower and higher temperatures; however, effectiveness may be reduced, and work time may be affected. Surface temperature is usually 10° F to 12 °F colder or hotter than the air temperature, depending on the substrate. Be aware of this during colder and warmer climates.

Application

Step 1: Ensure a test was completed prior to a full scale-application. Clean the surface to remove any loose debris and coatings. Cover all areas where stripping is not desired. Peel Away® 1 covers 20 sq. ft. per gallon.

Step 2: Apply Peel Away® 1 approximately 1/8” to 1/4” thick with a plastic scraper or trowel, according to successful test results. In temperatures above or below 40° F and 90° F, apply at a minimum 1/4” thick. Apply a maximum of 10 sq. ft. of Peel Away® 1 at a time before covering with Dumond® Laminated Paper to ensure the product does not dry. Do not allow Peel Away® 1 to harden. Apply the Dumond® Laminated Paper over the Peel Away® 1 paste and smooth to ensure there are no visible air pockets.

Step 3: Allow at least 12 – 48 hours to for Peel Away® 1 to work, according to successful test results. Once ready to be removed, use a scraper or pressure washer to remove product. Remove by inserting a trowel, spatula, or paint scraping tool underneath the paste and lift the Dumond® Laminated Paper while slowly scraping. To ensure exposed product does not dry, only remove, scrape, and clean 1-2 sq. ft. of area at a time. Scrub all surfaces clean with a sponge or nylon bristle bush and water. Rinse thoroughly with water to ensure all remaining residue is removed. Collect paint and product residue in plastic bags and dispose of in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.

Step 4: Leave for 24 – 48 hours or more to ensure the substrate is completely dry. Certain types of wood and porous substrates may require longer to dry. Neutralize the surface with the CitriLize™ Neutralizer enclosed under the lid. Follow the instructions on the Citri-Lize™. Use a standard pump sprayer or trigger spray bottle to apply. Do not rinse. Wait at least 24 – 48 hours or more until the substrate is completely dry before testing the pH with the included pH test strips. The pH should be between 6 – 8, and moisture content should be below 12%. If the surface pH is still too basic, use household distilled vinegar to lower the pH of the substrate. Neutralization is required when repainting or staining. Failure to ensure a pH between 6 – 8 can result in failed future coating applications, hazing, or flaking of the substrate. If recoating, consult the paint manufacturer for any specific pH and moisture reading ranges for new coatings.

Re-Painting Wooden Surfaces

For best results on wooden surfaces, use a moisture meter before re-painting. Re-painting can occur when moisture readings are 12% or below. Dumond® 02/2021 recommends the use of a premium 100% acrylic stain blocking primer on all wooden surfaces to minimize moisture problems including tannin staining, surfactant leeching, and peeling. Cedar, redwood, and cypress woods tend to bleed resin and/or tannic acids. A longer drying time may be required before painting these surfaces otherwise staining may occur. In some areas of the country, depending on moisture level, this can take up to 60 days. If this occurs, spot prime those areas with a shellac-based or alkyd-based stain killing primer.

Product Testing

Dumond® always recommends performing a test with the product before a full-scale application. Testing the product is the best way to ensure product effectiveness, and test patches determine the proper dwell time and thickness to apply the product for your specific application. Failure to do a test patch can result in failed applications, multiple unnecessary applications, or the wrong product application. Perform a small inconspicuous test area on each type of substrate and coating. Apply Peel Away® 1 in a small 6” x 6” section with a trowel at 1/8” to 1/4” thick. Apply the laminated paper on top and tape down edges. Ensure there are no air bubbles present. Leave for at least 24 hours. Remove and scrape a small corner of the test to reveal results. If successful, scrape off the remaining product and paper and move on to “Preparation” step. Removal may require agitation with a nylon bristle brush. Rinse with water. If the test was unsuccessful, leave on for another 24 hours. If the product still does not work, Dumond® recommends testing our Smart Strip® and Smart Strip® PRO products.
