The average manganese content of corn silage is 9ppm, well below the NRC guidelines for the milking cow of 20ppm (2001, pg 141). Manganese is most concentrated in the mitochondria of the cell, the center of all energy metabolism. Manganese is very poorly absorbed, and no mechanism exists for the up-regulation of its absorption. Some supplementation is essential. Manganez98, a sulfate form, is 200-300% better absorbed than manganese in the monoxide, dioxide, carbonate form (NRC 2001, pg 140.)
