Environmental Lubricants Manufacturing was formed in 2000 to commercialize bio-based lubricants and greases that had been created at the University of Northern Iowa’s National Agricultural-Based Lubricants Center. The UNI-NABL was founded in 1991, by Professor Lou Honary who is currently the ELM Chairman and President. For over two decades the UNI-NABL Center was a premier biobased lubricant technology developer with funding support from Soybean Growers of Iowa, USDA, DOE, and private agriculture industry.

It is formulated in accordance with the criteria established by USDA H-1 and U.S. FDA regulation 21 CFR 178.3570, “Lubricants With Incidental Food Contact.” It has been approved by the NSF.
