Product Highlights

Legal requirements on food packaging are very high. They have to be produced in a way that “…under normal or foreseeable conditions of use, they do not transfer their constituents to food in quantities which would:

  • Endanger human health; or
  • Bring about an unacceptable change in the composition of the food; or
  • Bring about a deterioration in the organoleptic characteristics thereof.*

* excerpt of article 3 of the framework regulation (EC) No. 1935/2004 of the European Parlament and Council of 27.10.2004

Thereby, always the complete packaging, consisting of printing substrate, ink, varnish and possible finishing components, are in the focus of the legislator. Therefore, measured and limit values do not refer to single components but always to the complete product.

These requirements can be achieved with the UV FoilStar LM series of Epple Druckfarben AG.

This series has an extremely good curing, excellent adhesion in the tesa-test and is extraordinary scratch resistant. Due to its optimized misting properties it is ideally suited for fast running continuous printing machines. By using photoinitiators with high molecular weight the migration potential of the ink is reduced. This series has been tested successfully regarding migration and odor reduction when printing on coated cardboard and especially for continuous printing on foil and labels.

This series can be used on sheet-fed offset printing machines and on continuous form printing machines.

In addition to the choice of suitable material (printing substrate, ink and varnish), also the optimal process which guarantees a curing of ink and varnish layer is essential for the printing of food packaging. In order to receive final assurance, a migration test of the final printed product should be conducted by an independent institution.

Before using additives such as thinner, accelerator or others, it has to be ensured that all requirements for the printing of food packaging are adhered to.
