    Features & Benefits

    What Is It For?

Caustic soda is one of the chemical products with the greatest presence in industrial activity. Its use extends to the following markets:

    • Organic and inorganic chemistry: manufacture of sodium compounds that can, in turn, be intermediate -such as sodium phenolate- in the preparation of aspirin or a final product such as sodium hypochlorite, an important bleach and bleach-based disinfectant.
    • Textile industry: finishing and sizing operations such as mercerizing, in which it improves the brightness and absorption of dyes, cleaning by removing wax and pectin, and bleaching with an oxidizing agent.
    • Detergents and surfactants: caustic soda is involved in the hydrolysis of animal and vegetable fats and oils to produce detergents. In the manufacture of powders, other sodium compounds are also involved in which soda is also present.
    • Production of gas and oil: soda is used in drilling to control the pH of mud and mud and as a bactericide. In petroleum refining it is used to extract sulfur, sulfur compounds and acids.
    • Aluminum production: extraction of alumina from bauxite, a base mineral.
    • Cellulose and paper industry: soda acts on the pulp to produce cellulose. In the paper industry, recycled raw material is bleached.
    • Rayon industry: dissolution of pulp lignin.
    • Food industry: refining animal and vegetable oils, cleaning bottles and beer-making equipment, and peeling potatoes, fruits and vegetables.
    • Water treatment: pH control and regeneration of ionic resins.
    • Agricultural industry: treatment of straw to improve its nutritional value and digestibility and cleaning of dairy equipment.
    • Other uses: paint stripping, drying extraction agent, enameling and degreasing and metal cleaning.
    Did You Know ?
    • The joint manufacture of caustic soda and chlorine is one of the main production lines of the Basic Chemistry Division of Ercros.
    • The joint production capacity of this product exceeds 420,000 t per year.
    • Ercros is the leading Spanish soda producer and the ninth in Europe.
    Description And Properties
    • Aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide.
    • In its liquid presentation, it is a colorless, transparent, viscous and highly alkaline liquid that absorbs moisture and atmospheric carbon dioxide.
    • Ercros obtains caustic soda by electrolysis of sodium chloride, in which chlorine and hydrogen are also obtained.
    • The liquid soda obtained has a 48-50% hydroxide content and a density of 1,525 g / l; the hydroxide content and the temperature modify the density of the product.
