We offer responsibly-sourced ingredients, stock bases to use as-is or modify, and a lab to create custom products exclusively for you. We focus on quality, sustainability, and science-backed formulas. As a full-service manufacturer we can fill, label, package, and ship your products to you or a distribution center. We craft all our bases and products onsite at our 70,000sq ft facility in Portland, Oregon, where we benefit from some of the cleanest and best water in the world. We’ve built a reputation for quality and consistency, and we believe everyone should understand what’s in their skin and hair care.Essential was founded by an innovative couple in 2002 with the goal of creating custom products for their children’s complex skin care needs. It grew from a kitchen operation all the way up to our current 2-building facility, now with the goal to make premium wholesale skin and hair care available to all. We’re very proud to support thousands of businesses around the globe and are constantly inspired by how they creatively market and alter our bases or craft their own unique products. Essential was purchased in late 2011, becoming a majority woman-owned business with an even broader commitment to sustainability and excellence. We moved from our previous location in SE Portland to the historic Industrial District in NW Portland in 2012, and have recently added an additional 15,000sf of adjacent warehouse space to accommodate our growth. Although our facilities are not open to the public due to confidentiality and manufacturing requirements, we remain accessible through our blog and video content, community events (prior to the pandemic), attending and presenting at conferences, and donating to both local and national causes close to our hearts. </p>

Alpha Lipoic Acid Powder is often referred to as the “Universal Antioxidant”. It rivals Vitamin C and E in it's antioxidant effects. This ALA does have a slight alcohol scent.

Niacinamide is a versatile and powerful ingredient that works beautifully in conjuncation with other key ingredients like AHAs, antioxidants, and other vitamins. It helps to improve the appearance of pores, renew and rejuvenate, moisturize, and balance oils. We recommend using Niacinamide in serums, lotions, and creams.

Beta-Carotene is an antioxidant and is also known as pro-vitamin A, a precursor of vitamin A. It is the pigment responsible for the orange color of carrots.

Refined Avocado Butter is obtained by cold pressing the fresh flesh of the fruit of the avocado tree. This lovely Avocado oil is then blended with hydrogenated vegetable oil to modify the rheology to create a “butter” which is soft and pliable. It is a very rich, moisturizing treatment for the hair and skin.

Aloe Vera Oil is produced by macerating organic dehydrated Aloe Vera in organic Soybean Oil and provides fast-absorbing nourishment. Vegan No Added Parabens No Added Phthalates No Added Gluten No Added Palm. A very mild musky odor exists and this oil is a clear off-white to yellow color depending on the batch of plants.

Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate is a stable, water soluble derivative of Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic acid). Unlike L-Ascorbic Acid, this vitamin C does not break down in water based products.

Argan is a light oil with high amounts of Vitamin E. It is a great and nourishing carrier oil frequently used in hair care. Its high level of phenols and phenolic acid, carotenes, squalene, essential fatty acids, and 80% unsaturated fatty acids make it an excellent choice for many types of skin.
This light and lustrous oil is hand extracted (initially) by cracking the argan nut and grinding the kernel into a paste. The paste is then manipulated to extract the oil. More oil is later extracted from the paste residue via an expeller.

Our Avocado Butter Certified Organic is obtained from the fresh fruit flesh of the avocado and not from the stone, and then mixed with a soft shea stearin. Uses include cleansing creams, moisturizers, skin care, hair conditioners, lipsticks, suntan lotions, bath oils and makeup bases.
