The Science

The intercellular lipids of the stratum corneum contain cholesterol, ceramides and fatty acids, which play a key role in the skin's barrier function. Cholesterol and cholesterol sulfate constitute approximately 1/3rd of these lipids and have been shown to be necessary in normal skin barrier functions, including lamellar structure formation and controlling permeability.
