Medical car-freatment of mild to moderate Aizheimers disease and various other memory impairments, in particular those of vascular origin. Galanthamine belongs to class of medications called acetylcholinesterase inhibitors. It works by increasing the amount of a certain natural substances in the brain needed for memory and thought. Galanthamine may improve the ability to think and remember or slow the loss of these abilities in people who have AD. Cholinesterase inhibitors inhibit (block) the action of acetylcholinesterase, the enzyme responsible for the destruction of acetyicholine. By blocking the enzyme that destroys acetylcholine, Galanthamine increases the concentrafion of acetylcholine in the brain, and this increase is belleved to be responsible for the improvement in thinking.
