"In 1891, Heinrich Grau and August Locher founded the chemical factory ""Grau und Locher"", initially in rented rooms in Schwäbisch Gmünd. As early as 1897, today's factory was built on our own property in Bismarckstraße. Mainly chemical-technical products were manufactured like leather fat, shoe polish, floor wax, soap powder, insect powder.

After the First World War and the difficult years of inflation, the company was continued by Waldemar and Leonhard Grau and the company name changed to ""Gebrüder Grau u. Co."". In addition to the chemical-technical products, some cosmetic items have already been included in the range. In 1946, immediately after World War II, the company launched the first German bubble bath.


In 1958, the third generation, Heinz Grau, took over the management of the company. As a chemist, Heinz Grau soon recognized that the market opportunities in the area of ​​raw material production are much better than in the area of ​​finished products. Emulsifiers for perfumery and cosmetics were developed, followed by plant extracts and active ingredients. The production of fragrances and perfume specialties as well as aroma chemicals began as early as the 1950s. In 1979 the company was renamed ""Grau Aromatics GmbH & Co. KG"". This reflects the importance of aroma chemicals for the aroma and perfumery industry. 

In January 2003, Heinz Grau's nephew, Markus Grimminger, began working as a shareholder and managing director of the company after studying at the University of Karlsruhe.
