Organic Argan Oil comes from the argan tree [Argania Spinosal, a thorny tree that grows exclusively in the region of southwest Morocco, the «Souss» plain, on an area of 800,000 hectares. The argan grove has been classified as a «Biosphere Reserve» by Unesco since 1998. The argan tree can live up to 200 years. This endemic species represents an excellent anti-desertification barrier thanks to its deep roots. Harvesting Argan fruit is a Berber tradition exclusively reserved for women. Gestures and know how have been passed down for generations. Between June and August, the women collect the ripe fruit that has fallen on the ground, and dry it for several weeks in the sun. Once the skin has been removed, the nut is split between two stones to extract the oil kernels. They are then ground and cold-pressed to extract the oil which will be deodorized. Argan oil has always been used by the Berber population of the Atlas to protect themselves from extremely harsh climatic conditions (winds, sun]. The argan tree has long been part of the village economy: Its very hard wood is used in construction or as fuel, its leaves as fodder for goats and its almonds for the manufacture of argan oil. Thousands of people live directly or indirectly from this resource. In order to participate in a sustainable development approach in Morocco, our partner has created an association to support projects relating to the protection of the argan grove and the socioeconomic development of rural populations.
