The White Hibiscus is cultivated in Senegal in the regions of Diourbel, Louga and Saloum in a traditional way by the population in addition to sorghum, millet and peanut crops. The cultivators wait for the first rains to sow, from there, it takes three months for the plant to reach maturity. No treatment is used, neither fertilizer nor pesticide, because the plant is very resilient.
- A Traditional Know-How
The White Hibiscus is harvested by hand. Men prepare the soil and women take care of the calyx harvest as well as the various postharvest stages. Together, they go to the fields to work collectively and help each other. After harvest, women spread the calyxes in the sun for quick drying in order to facilitate shattering. Color sorting is performed because there are three varieties of hibiscus; red, purple and white, that are grown simultaneously in the fields. Then, the graining consists in removing the seeds which they will keep aside for sowing the following year. The seedless calyxes are left to dry for a few days in order to obtain the optimum quality. The dried calyxes can be crushed or left whole depending on the use and the commercial purpose. The calyxes are either exported or intended for local markets and self consumption. The population consumes a lot of hibiscus calyxes in juice (bissap] and in cooking.
