Moisturizing - Mineralizing - LighteningCucumis sativus: The cucumber is a creeping herbaceous vegetable, of the same family as the melon or the squash (family of Cucurbits). The large alternate leaves, stipulated, are webbed and have three to five lobes. The edge of the blade is toothed. The flowers are pale yellow. The elongated and fleshy fruits, with a rough touch, can reach 30 cm long and 5 cm in diameter. They contain many seeds. Their color at maturity varies according to the varieties from green to white through yellow. The seeds are yellowish white and very flattened.

Moisturizing
The cucumber is best known known for its moisturizing activity. Indeed, thanks to its richness in proteins, amino acids, minerals and sugars, it takes part in the two ways of hydration of the skin: the active and passive ways. In fact, the active phenomenon consists in providing the skin with emollient agents such as humectants (agents which bind water to the surface of the skin) and the components of NMF (Natural Moisturizing Factors), water-soluble, hygroscopic and natural in the stratum corneum. The sugars, proteins, amino acids and organic acids present in cucumber are hygroscopic molecules, which will therefore capture particles of surrounding water and bind them to the surface of the skin. The Cucumber extract thus acts in the active way of skin hydration. On the other hand, the passive phenomenon involves substances that act as a barrier to TEWL (Trans- Epidermal Water Loss). The proteins and polysaccharides contained in the fruit are natural polymers: they will create a protective film on the stratum corneum, limiting the TEWL. They will reduce water loss by strengthening the impermeability of the epidermis. The Cucumber extract therefore acts in the passive way of skin hydration.
- The cucumber extract helps to maintain a correct degree of hydration, by connecting the surrounding water molecules. Therefore, it prevents water loss and therefore dehydration.
- The Cucumber extract is a reparative extract: it reduces the skin dryness and reinforces the barrier function
Remineralizing
The cucumber is particularly rich in minerals and trace elements, and in particular in potassium, calcium, magnesium; all three powerful regulating active ingredients in skin structures. Indeed, potassium is an essential electrolyte insofar as it constitutes the main intracellular cation. The difference in gradient between the intracellular pool and the extracellular pool is the basis of the physiological role it plays in intercellular communication. The cells thus interact more easily in order to strengthen the skin structures. In addition, calcium is involved in many functions, including membrane permeability. It would also play a very important role in the regulation of epidermal differentiation. The barrier function of the skin is then normalized and improved. Also, magnesium is a major catalytic element. It stabilizes cellular organists and participates in all major cellular mechanisms including in particular the phenomena of redox and ionic regulations. Integrated with defense, growth and immunity mechanisms, it exerts an anti-stress, anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory effect. The skin is soothed.
- The skin structures are improved, the barrier function is strengthened and the skin normalized.
- The Cucumber extract is a reparative extract: it helps to regulate homeostasis by remineralizing the skin.
Lightening
The Cucumber extract also has lightening properties. It works by inhibiting the enzymatic activity of tyrosinase and thus decreases the production of melanin. Tyrosinase is the key enzyme in the production of melanin.
Tyrosinase catalyzes two types of reactions in the biosynthesis of melanin, the hydroxylation of L-tyrosine to 3-4-dihydroxy-L-phenylalanine (L-DOPA) and the oxidation of L-DOPA to o-dopaquinone. This oquinone is transformed into melanins in a series of non-enzymatic reactions. Therefore, tyrosinase is a target in the development of new lighteners.

- The cucumber extract reduces the pigmentation of the skin and unifies the complexion, giving it a real "luminous effect".
- The Cucumber extract is a reparative extract: it helps to preserve the radiance of the skin.
Antioxidant
Cucumber contains phenolic compounds such as phenolic acids, which are very powerful antioxidant compounds. They are capable of directly neutralizing free radicals, reducing the concentration of peroxide, repairing oxidized membranes or even reducing the production of reactive species. These molecules inhibit biological oxidations, which induce cell and tissue damage, thus accelerating the mechanisms of skin aging. Thus, cucumber has high antioxidant capacities, which have been demonstrated.

- The Cucumber extract helps to fight against free radicals and protects cell and membrane structures against damage.
- The Cucumber extract is a reparative extract: it helps to fight against skin aging.
Restructuring
Cucumber has a skin restructuring activity and regenerative properties. Indeed, various data have shown its ability to counter the phenomena of aging which induce a degradation of skin structures. In particular, the cucumber protects the dermal structures, as elastic fibers against damage. It inhibits hyaluronidase and elastase.
