Surface Preparation

HELMIBOND 6505 can be used on porous and non-porous surfaces free of moisture. Surface to be covered must be dry, clean and smooth. Any foreign materials present such as paint, grease, oil, pen markings, adhesive residues, etc. that may prevent a proper bond or migrate to the surface causing a stain must be removed. Adhesive can be used on all grades of concrete on, above or below grade in the absence of moisture. Installation of a 0.010” or greater effective moisture retarder is recommended directly under all on and below grade concrete floors with its integrity insured. Concrete shall be prepared according to the recommendations outlined in ASTM F710 (Standard Practice for Preparing Concrete Floors to Receive Resilient Flooring). Concrete floors shall be free from crazing, dusting, spalling and any curing or sealing compounds. Concrete floors shall be tested for moisture according to the latest revision of ASTM F2170 (Standard Test Method for Determining Relative Humidity in Concrete Floor Slabs Using in situ Probes) and ASTM F1869 (Standard Test Method for Measuring Moisture Vapor Emission Rate of Concrete Subfloor Using Anhydrous Calcium Chloride. Wood floors must be double construction with a 1” minimum thickness, structurally sound, securely fastened and free from deflection/spring. Top layer of wood shall be underlayment grade plywood. Cracks and uneven surfaces must be filled with an approved cement-based patching compound.

Application

Cork Flooring Roll adhesive evenly onto tiles and substrate and allow to completely air dry. Once adhesive on both tile and sub-floor is dry, tile may be installed. The adhesive will dry to a transparent color. To verify adhesive is dry, apply slight pressure to the surface. If there is any tack or if adhesive pulls from the surface, allow additional time to dry. As long as the area is dust free, the use of a fan to circulate air is permitted to expedite the drying process. Install tiles into adhesive. Once tiles make contact with the substrate, the adhesive will create a permanent bond preventing movement of tile. Roll flooring within 10 minutes of installing material with a 100-pound sectional floor roller. Roll flooring in both directions. Transition and Wall Moldings Position material on floor or wall and mark area. This will be used as guidelines to which adhesive will be applied. Adhesive can be applied by rolling or brushing. Apply adhesive evenly to both surfaces. Avoid heavy or excessive applications. When applying contact adhesives to porous materials such as plywood, it is advisable to apply two coats.

Apply the first coat and allow to dry. This will act as a sealer. When dry apply the second coat and allow to dry properly before bonding. This helps to ensure that the adhesive will not soak into the substrate and that there is the proper amount on the surface to achieve a strong, permanent bond. Allow the adhesive to properly dry before bonding. When dry, adhesive will not transfer to finger. Normal dry time is 20-40 minutes, but will vary depending on temperature, humidity and coat weight. Dry time can be reduced using air movement. Bonds can be made as soon as the adhesive is dry. Carefully position material along guidelines. A strong bond is achieved instantly upon contact. Once adhesive is dry, materials shall be positioned into adhesive within 90 minutes. After material is positioned, roll area with a hand roller to ensure contact over the entire bonded area. Post Installation Prevent all traffic for a minimum of 24 hours. Restrict heavy traffic and rolling loads for a minimum of 72 hours after installation. Do not wash or begin maintenance procedures on the floor for a minimum of 5 days after installation to allow the adhesive to properly cure.

Clean-up

Remove wet adhesive immediately with a clean cloth dampened with mineral spirits, isopropanol or acetone. Cured adhesive is very difficult to remove. Do not apply solvents directly to flooring. Use caution when handling flammable solvents.
