Surface Preparation
  • Surface must be clean, dry and free of dust, dirt, grease, oil, mold, mildew, lose wood fibers, soap residue, flaking paint, chalk, wax, corrosion, laitance, and all other contaminants or foreign matter that might impede adhesion. Existing wood surfaces must be structurally sound and completely dry. Moisture content must be below 15% or wood must be exposed to dry weather a minimum of 3 to 5 days. Sand any exposed deteriorated wood to a fresh surface. Patch imperfections with a wood filler. Some woods, such as redwood and cedar, contain a high amount of tannin, a colored wood extract.
  • In severe cases a coat of his 1900 ext primer may be needed. The first coat may show some tannin discoloration, but it will be trapped in the first coat. A second coat will uniform the appearance. Scrape, sand, and spot prime all knots and pitch streaks with his 1900 primer. Stucco remove any loose stucco, efflorescence, or laitance. Allow new stucco to cure at least 30 days before painting. New concrete, masonry, concrete block refer to sspc-sp13/nace 6. Remove all loose mortar and foreign material. Concrete must be free of laitance, concrete dust, dirt, form release agents, moisture curing membranes, loose cement and hardeners. Concrete and mortar must be cured to the supplier’s recommendation – usually 30 days @ 75°F.
  • On tilt-up and poured-in-place concrete, commercial detergents and abrasive blasting may be necessary. Fill bug holes, air pockets, and other voids. Brick must be allowed to weather 1 year prior to surface preparation and painting. Prime with his 1900 primer. Composition board / hardboard because of the potential for wax bleeding out of the substrate, apply one coat of his ext 8200 alkyd primer and then topcoat. Aluminum & galvanized steel solvent wash to remove any oil, grease, or other surface contamination. All corrosion must be removed with sandpaper, steel wood, or other abrading method.
  • Vinyl siding clean the surface thoroughly by scrubbing with warm soapy water. Rinse thoroughly. Steel rust and mill scale must be removed using sandpaper, steel wool, or other abrading method. Bare steel must be primed the same day as cleaned. Mildew remove before painting by washing with a solution of 1 part liquid bleach and 3 parts water. Apply the solution and scrub the mildewed area, allow it to sit on the surface for 10 minutes then rinse thoroughly. Wear protective eyewear, clothing, and gloves. Gaps between, ceilings, walls, molding, and other exterior wood trim surfaces can be filled with appropriate caulk after priming the surface. Glossy surfaces should be sanded dull to promote adhesion. Existing peeled or checked paint should be scraped and sanded to a sound surface.
  • To refinish surfaces in poor or questionable condition, completely remove the old finish and treat as for new wood. Recognize that any surface preparation short of total removal of the old coating may compromise the service length of the system. Warning! Removing existing coating from surface by sanding, scraping or other mechanical means may create dust or particles containing lead, a hazardous substance.
  • Avoid creating and breathing dust and other debris. Thoroughly clean all surfaces before and after painting. Breathing or eating lead-containing dust or debris can cause health problems, especially in children and pregnant women. Controlling exposure to lead or other hazardous substances requires the use of proper protective equipment, such as a properly fitted (niosh approved) respirator and proper containment and cleanup.
Applications
  • Coverage will range from 250-350 square feet per gallon. Coverage figure does not include spray loss, loss due to surface porosity, surface texture, surface irregularities, nor material loss when mixing. Mixing material does not require thinning. Stir each container thoroughly before using and occasionally while applying to keep uniform consistency and color. For color uniformity, mix all cans together before use.
  • Application apply evenly with a nylon/polyester, brush, 1⁄2” – 1” synthetic roller cover, or spray. When applying by roller, roll from the dry area into the wet area using firm crisscrossing strokes. Finish with long even strokes in one direction. For airless application, use a 0.17 to 0.19” tip @ 2000 psi. If spraying, always back brush or back roll immediately to ensure proper penetration and uniformity. Do not apply in direct sunlight or on a hot surface. During application at temperatures above 80of, majesty sets up quickly. Some adjustment in your painting approach may be required. Paint from a dry area in the adjoining wet coating area. Maintain a wet edge to avoid lap marks.
  • Previously painted and unpainted surfaces prime all bare surfaces and unpainted surfaces with one coat of ultimate 1900 exterior acrylic primer. Allow 4 hours drying time before top coating with ultimate exterior coating. Some woods such as redwood and cedar may contain excessive amounts of tannins resulting in problem areas with stain bleed through. In such cases, prime or spot-prime area with 8200 series alkyd wood primer.
  • Cleanup clean spills and spatters promptly. Clean hands, tools, and spray equipment immediately after use with soap and warm water. Give spray equipment a final flush with mineral spirits to help prevent corrosion. Follow manufacturer’s safety recommendations when using mineral spirits. Dispose of used paint and waste in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations.
