Product Highlights

United Erie’s phenolic urethane binder systems have been formulated to maintain a high flash point and low odor/VOC with an ultra-low level of free formaldehyde. Part 1’s & Part 2’s, in combination with the desired accelerator, is a three-part system that will achieve excellent work and strip time ratios. Part 1 is a phenolic resin while Part 2 contains a polymeric isocyanate. Mold/core high tensile strengths, rapid strength development, and excellent hot strengths make this binder system tailor-made for the ferrous industry.

  • Part 1’s and Part 2’s are proven to be one of the most odor approved PUNB binder systems in the market
  • A high flash point has enabled this system to significantly reduce the level of irritating odor at the mixing station, relative to other competitors
  • Part 1 and Part 2’s provide excellent work and strip time ratio
  • Strength development is rapid with molds/cores capable of being pour ready in a very short period of time
  • High tensile strengths, hot strengths, and excellent shake-out make this binder a premier system for the ferrous industry
  • Part 1’s and Part 2’s have been formulated with a unique built-in formaldehyde scavenger, which gradually reduces free formaldehyde to none detectable levels

Product Application Instructions
  • Mixing/curing: United Erie PUNB systems are best used with a continuous mixer to handle high production requirements. Batch mixing is suitable for other applications. Sand should be clean and dry. Silica, Lake, and most specialty sands have proven suitable for use with this system. Sand temperatures of 75°F to 85°F are ideal. The use of sand over 100°F would require the use of slow-reacting accelerators and is liable to generate a rapid loss of solvent. Sand heaters are very helpful in areas where cold sand is common. Mixers should be kept clean and calibrated on a regular basis. Total binder levels between 0.70% and 1.50% are generally recommended, depending on individual operational needs. A typical binder level is 1.20% to 1.30% total, based on the weight of the sand (BOS) and split 55:45. Strip times can be made to vary between less than one minute to 1 hour. Typical strip times will average from 3 minutes to 7 minutes, at 75°F. Accelerators should be used at 1% to 4%, based on the weight of the total binder (BOB). Accelerator 525 should meet most operational requirements. Super-fast curing Accelerator 5598 can achieve a strip time of less than one minute.
  • Mold/core Making: United Erie PUNB systems produce very flowable sand mixes. Light ramming or tucking in corners and around loose pieces may be desirable to increase density. Density is directly related to casting surface quality. Vibration on a compaction table of 3 to 5 seconds has proven sufficient. A sand-resin mix that has reached the end of its work time should not be used. Molds/cores can be handled immediately upon stripping. Molds/cores are pour-ready as desired.
  • Coating: Most refractory coatings can be used with United Erie PUNB systems. United Erie’s Top Bond B surface hardener has proven to be effective as an alternative to other coatings. Top Bond B produces excellent surface scratch hardness and further enhances moisture resistance.
