J V Barrett And Co Ltd Black Bitumen Paint PABB205

Black Bitumen Paint is a medium viscosity bitumen reduced with a C9-C12 petroleum derived hydrocarbon. It is black in appearance, mobile and compatible as a waterproof protective coating for a wide variety of substrates (iron, steel, lead, zinc, aluminum, asbestos, cement, concrete, stone, wood, felt and brick). When dry, the product forms an odorless and taint-free black film. It can be used for metal protection and overcoating of wood and felt roofing. For large civil projects, it meets the requirements of a highways/civil engineering grade cutback bitumen.

Applications & Uses

Application Method
Area of Uses
  • Rejuvenating topcoat over aged bituminous roofing materials, corrugated sheets and felts
  • Traditional protective coating for wrought iron railings, metal drainpipes/guttering and corrugated metal roofing
  • Protection of below ground fence posts
  • Non-potable water tank liner
  • Barrier against water and water vapor for brickwork, blockwork and stonework
  • Protection of iron and steel against corrosion
  • Protection of subterranean concrete structures against ground water ingress
  • Sealing and protection of exposed concrete structures and surfaces
  • Viscosity modifier to other compatible bitumen-based paints and primers
  • Darkening/tinting compatible solvent-based systems
Application

All surfaces should be smooth, clean, dry, sound and free from frost, oil, grease, condensation and other contamination. Product may be applied to ‘green’ concrete. The minimum ambient temperature for application is 5°C, it is not recommended to apply the product at temperatures below this as specified drying times will not be achieved. Product is recommended to be brush or roller applied, avoid pouring directly onto a horizontal surface. This may cause puddling during application and increase drying time. Should the product require thinning, it is recommended to thin 5-10% by volume of white spirit initially and evaluate the resulting viscosity. The product should not need to be thinned if recommended storage conditions have been maintained.

The product can be applied as a single coat in certain applications but two coats is universally recommended. Performance is improved where the second coat is applied at right angles to the first but it is not essential to do so. Leave 2-4 hours before overcoating with the second coat. A touch test on the 1st coat will indicate readiness. If applying to metal, ensure the surface is well prepared in advance. Wire brush off any rust and ensure clean and dry. Where long-term protection is required treat with a rust-inhibitive product such as red lead or zinc phosphate.

Recommended Number of Coats

Two recommended, however in severe conditions three coats for maximum protection. Allow 24 hours drying time between coats.

Thinners

Not normally required, however the paint may be diluted with BSS245 Barrettine White Spirit in order to adjust the viscosity for spraying.

Cleaning

Tool etc may be cleaned with Barrettine White Spirit.

Safety & Health

Toxicity & Precautions

Product is classified as hazardous according to the CLP Regulation (Reg. (EC) No 1272/2008). This product contains: Hydrocarbons, C9-C12, n-alkanes, isoalkanes, cyclics, aromatics (2-25%). It is recommended that the end user wear safety glasses, safety gloves and protective clothing during application. Avoid direct contact with skin and eyes. Do not eat, drink or smoke while handling or using the product.

Safety & Health

Flammable liquid and vapor. May cause drowsiness or dizziness. Causes damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure. Toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects. Keep out of reach of children. Keep away from heat, hot surfaces, sparks, open flames and other ignition sources. No smoking. Avoid breathing vapors, spray. Storage & Handling

Storage

Product is not chemically sensitive to heat or cold but extreme temperatures should be avoided. Product should be stored in well-maintained storage tanks if bulk received or in the original manufacturer packaging if packaged. Do not store with oxidisers and keep away from sources of ignition, the product is flammable. The product has an infinite shelf life provided its container has not been opened. If opened, the product should be used within 24 months. Longer storage times may result in the bitumen dropping out of solution to the base of the container, rigorous and thorough stirring is therefore advised prior to application.
