Use

Coelan® Balcony Finish is used as a topcoat over the Coelan® Balcony coating system over balconies, walkways, patios, and sun decks. The system may be applied over concrete, plywood, most metal, wood, and masonry surfaces, as well as capable of recovering and resealing existing polyurethane coating systems.

Limitations

The following conditions must not be coated with the Coelan® Balcony coating systems or products: on below grade slabs, split slabs with buried membrane, sandwich slabs with insulation, slabs over unvented metal pan, suspended pool decks, swimming pools, magnesite, lightweight concrete, asphalt surfaces and asphalt overlays. Balcony Finish may be applied only when the ambient temperature is 50°F (10°C) or rising, and the substrate temperature is a minimum of 5 degrees above the dew point. If more than 24 hours passes between coats, re-prime the surface with Coelan® Primer GP or Coelan® Primer NC.

Yield

Refer to System Application Rates. All yields are approximate and may vary depending upon smoothness and absorbency of substrate.

Surface Preparation

All surfaces must be free from gross irregularities, loose, unsound or foreign material such as dirt, ice, snow, water, grease, oil, release agents, lacquers, or any other condition that would be detrimental to adhesion of the topcoat. Note: Prior to opening the containers of Coelan® Balcony FInish Resin, wear appropriate safety glasses and protect hands and wrists by wearing gauntlet-type neoprene gloves.

Mixing of Topcoat

Before application, mix Coelan® Balcony Finish using a mechanical mixer at slow speed until a homogeneous mixture and color is obtained. Use caution not to whip air into the material as this may result in pinhole blisters and/or shortened pot life.

Application

Apply Coelan® Balcony Finish evenly over the entire deck. For best results usa a phenolic resin core roller. Extra care should be taken not to cause air bubbles. The topcoat may require more than one coat depending on the job specification and requirements. When estimating material requirements, coverage rates tend to increase for subsequent coats of material. To obtain proper adhesion between coats it is imperative that recoating be done within 24 hours. The topcoat requires continuous coating application to minimize lines and/or streaking. Open containers must be used as soon as possible.

Coelan® Balcony Finish is very sensitive to heat and moisture. Higher temperatures and/or high humidity will accelerate the cure time. If accelerated curing is required, add one quart of Coelan® Balcony Finish Accelerator in a 5 gallon pail of Coelan® Balcony Finish and mix thoroughly. This accelerated topcoat will cure in 6-8 hours at 75°F (24°C) and 50% relative humidity.

Allow 24 hours before permitting light pedestrian traffic and 72 hours before heavy pedestrian traffic. Surface may be slippery when wet.

Equipment should be cleaned with an environmentally safe solvent, as permitted under local regulations, immediately after use.
