Limitations

The following conditions must not be coated with the Coelan® coating systems or products: on below grade slabs, split slabs with buried membrane, sandwich slabs with insulation, slabs over unvented metal pan, suspended pool decks, swimming pools, magnesite, lightweight concrete, asphalt surfaces and asphalt overlays. Primer may be applied only when the ambient temperature is 50 ºF (10 ºC) or rising, and the substrate temperature is a minimum of 5 degrees above the dew point. The primer is not UV-stable and must be coated with the basecoat within 12-16 hours.

Yield

Approximately 1 gallon / 300 sf (0.14 liters/m2 ), refer to System Application Rates.

Note: All yields are approximate and may vary depending upon smoothness and absorbency of substrate.

Surface Preparation

All surfaces must be free from gross irregularities, loose, unsound or foreign material such as dirt, ice, snow, water, grease, oil, release agents, lacquers, or any other condition that would be detrimental to adhesion of the topcoat. This requires careful preparation of existing horizontal and vertical substrates; cracks and cold joints are filled, and expansion joints are prepared.

Note: Prior to opening the containers of Coelan® Primer, wear appropriate safety glasses and protect hands and wrists by wearing gauntlet-type neoprene gloves.

Mixing of Primer

Before application, mix each component individually. Using a mechanical mixer at slow speed mix the two components together until a homogeneous mixture and color is obtained. Use caution not to whip air into the material as this may result in pinhole blisters and/or shortened pot life. Note: Do not dilute primer.

Application

Apply the primer evenly over the entire deck with phenolic resin core roller or brush. The primer should be applied at the rate of 1 gallon / 300 sf (0.14 liters/m2 ). Coverage rates may vary depending on the surface roughness and porosity. Primer must be tack free before applying the basecoat. Ensure to protect areas that are not to receive primer as it will penetrate into the surface.

Approximate curing time is 3-5 hours at 75°F (24°C) and 50% relative humidity.

The primer is very sensitive to heat and moisture. Higher temperatures and/or high humidity will accelerate the cure time and low temperatures and/or humidity will extend the cure time. Use caution in batch sizes and thickness of application.

Equipment should be cleaned with an environmentally safe solvent, as permitted under local regulations, immediately after use.

Storage & Handling

Storage

Always store in cool and dry location. Do not store in direct sunlight or in temperatures below 60ºF (15°C) or above 95°F (35°C). Approximate shelf life 12 months with proper storage.

Disposal

Cured primer may be disposed of in standard landfills. This is accomplished by thoroughly mixing all components. Note: Uncured product is considered a hazardous material and must be handled as such, in accordance with local, state and federal regulations. Do not throw un-cured product away.
