- Encourages faster collagen production in response to stress or joint tissue injury : Following injury to joint tissue, the presence of the Functional Keratin® used in DFK-FLEX™ stimulates the cellular response to encourage faster growth, increased collagen production and - as a result - faster healing. This is clearly demonstrated by the extensive use of Functional Keratin® in wound healing products for acute and chronic tissue damage, in particular products used on hard to heal injuries.
- Combats aging tissue atrophy by building lean body mass : Healthy aging requires the body to produce structural proteins to maintain and - in some cases - rebuild damaged tissue. Dietary supplementation with the Functional Keratin® in DFK-FLEX was studied as part of a randomized, controlled, blinded crossover study of cyclists in which regular exercise was used to create stress on the body. Following two periods of 4 weeks of protein supplementation, including a 2 month wash out period, an 880g increase in lean body mass occurred when supplementing the cyclist’s diet with Functional Keratin® compared to a 70g increase in lean body mass on a dairy protein control diet. Strong statistical significance confirms the validity of the finding.
- Protects against joint inflammation by minimizing inflammatory mediators inside the cell : Taurine is well established as being important in energy metabolism and anti-inflammatory pathways, notably through scavenging hypochlorous acid generated by neutrophils. The energy effects of taurine underpin the performance claims of energy drinks such as Red Bull. However, health concerns have been raised over high levels of taurine ingestion, and studies also suggest that taurine supplementation is less effective at boosting taurine metabolism than supplementing with the nutritional building blocks required. A major inflammatory mediator produced by cells under inflammatory stress is interleukin-1 (IL-1). IL-1 then stimulates production of many inflammatory molecules, the most significant being prostaglandin E2 (PGE2 ). High levels of PGE2 are a significant cause of chronic inflammation (Fahmi et al. 2004) and suppression of PGE2 has long been recognized as a therapy for inflamed joint pain. DFK-FLEX™ contains a form of keratin measured as reducing the IL-1 stimulated production of PGE2, demonstrating a very significant anti-inflammatory effect.
