- In-Vitro Pseudo-Ceramide Functionality
Lipids found in healthy skin are largely in a lamellar gel crystalline state that is responsible for the skin barrier function in the stratum corneum. Ceramides and cholesterol serve a vital role by acting together with fatty acids to properly organize the lipid phase of the skin. Ideally then, skincare products or ingredients that impart, induce, or maintain a lamellar gel state will be most beneficial. This is the role that KY-MAC plays in formulations. KY-MAC and palmitic acid form a highly ordered lamellar gel that is analogous to the lipid barrier in healthy skin and that can deplicate in-vitro effect of the more expensive and complex combination of cholesterol and ceramide-2.
