Science
Among the many beauty buzzwords, retinoids are some of the most used and studied ingredients that show promise in minimizing skin aging and improving the skin tone. They are mainly known to enhance skin regeneration, to improve the extracellular matrix (ECM), and to activate the skin’s antioxidant response, altogether providing a complete skin rejuvenating effect. Nevertheless, the topical application of retinoids is also associated with undesired effects related to skin inflammation, which causes many consumers to avoid their use and opt for gentler alternatives, such as bakuchiol.
Stevisse™ advanced botanical ingredient showed to induce the expression of genes related to the pathway of retinoids, in vitro. As a result, the ingredient helped to promote similar activities to retinoic acid, such as skin regeneration, enhancement of ECM proteins, and the boost of cellular resistance to oxidative stress, all of this while minimizing the skin inflammation associated with retinoids, similarly to bakuchiol. In vivo, the ingredient helped minimize the appearance of wrinkles, it homogenized the skin tone and reduced the number of dark spots.

Bringing Out The Skin’s Natural Beauty: 21 women applied a cream with 2% Stevisse™ advanced botanical ingredient on half of their face and a placebo cream on the other half, twice a day. After 28 days of treatment, wrinkle area and length, skin tone homogeneity and dark spots were evaluated.
Minimized appearance of wrinkles: Photographs were analyzed for the measurement of the area and length of wrinkles.
After 28 days: Naturally-diminished wrinkles: Decrease of up to 87.3% and 85.3% in wrinkle area and length, respectively.
Skin tone evening effect: Facial skin color distribution and the amount of pigmented spots were evaluated by a specific software for image analysis of the skin characteristics.
After 28 days: More uniform skin tone with a reduced appearance of dark spots
