The raw material is harvested at an ocean depth of 18 meters, roughly 50 km off the coast of Maranhão in Northeast Brazil. The organic wild collection is sustainable and environmentally friendly. It takes place in accordance with nature, which means only as many sediments are removed as can grow back. Thus, the ecological balance is maintained.

The marine red algae Lithothamnium calcareum assimilates and concentrates the nutrients and minerals present in seawater. It contains more than 70 minerals, including rare trace elements such as iodine, selenium, zinc, cobalt, copper and chromium. Of particular interest is the very high calcium content, 33.6 g per 100 g of Lithothamnium calcareum. These minerals are also very easily resorbed thanks to the natural honeycomb structure of Lithothamnium calcareum.Calcium is required for maintaining normal bones and teeth. Calcium helps the normal functioning of digestive enzymes. The daily requirement for adults is 800 mg, with a higher requirement for adolescents, pregnant women, nursing mothers and people over 50 to prevent possible bone diseases.

For suppliers of organic plant drinks in particular, Lithothamnium calcareum – the first organic source of calcium – is highly appealing. With the reform to the EU Ecodesign Directive expected in January 2021, the addition of conventional Lithothamnium calcareum will no longer be permitted. But also for products such as oat drinks, additional calcium is a crucial selling point. Only then can plant drinks provide a vegan alternative to milk that offers an equal nutritional value in terms of calcium. According to the health claim regulation, the addition of calcium allows health claims can be made, such as drawing attention to the importance for bones and teeth. Further applications can be found in the areas of dietary supplements, cosmetics and pet food, as well as in the areas of fertilizers and water treatment

Our partners Litholife in Brazil have received an organic certification for their Lithothamnium calcareum harvested off the North coast of Brazil in accordance with the NOP standard (National Organic Program). nat4Life Europe owns exclusive distribution rights to this product in Europe. The goods are initially imported to the USA via our sister company nat4Life America. There, the product undergoes further processing before being shipped to Germany as part of the equivalence agreement and receiving EU organic certification.
