Norchem Concrete Products SILICA FUME

Norchem Concrete Products Silica Fume is a very fine pozzolanic material, composed of amorphous silica produced by electric arc furnaces as a byproduct of the production of elemental silicon or ferro silicon alloys. When added to precast and ready-mixed concrete, silica fume produces high-performance, high-strength concrete with an increased life-span and improved structural economics. SILICA FUME is produced in conformance with the ASTM C-1240 specifications. The quality is controlled and monitored throughout the entire production process to ensure that it meets or exceeds specification requirements.

Features & Benefits

Benefits

Prevents reinforcing steel corrosion in concrete, due to its extremely low permeability to chloride-ion intrusion and high electrical resistivity.

  • Greater impermeability, barring the ingress of moisture, chemicals and other contaminants.
  • High early strengths, assuring increased efficiency and greater cost effectiveness in production of prestressed and precast concrete.
  • High ultimate compressive strengths (8,000-20,000 psi), proportionate to amount of silica fume and the water-to-cementitious ratio.
  • Substantially greater resistance to corrosion, abrasion and erosion, chemical attack and freeze/thaw damage.

Applications & Uses

Applications

SILICA FUME can be used in a variety of applications such as concrete, grouts, mortars, fiber cement products, refractory, oil/gas well cements, ceramics, elastomer, and polymer applications.

It is ideal for use in structures exposed to chemical and environmental attack.

  • Parking garages
  • Bridge decks
  • Marine structures
  • Slabs
  • Roadways

In precast concrete (made in a manufacturing environment) it is more efficient, and results in cost and time savings.

  • High early and higher ultimate compressive strengths
  • Eliminates steam curing
  • Savings on heating costs and rapid turnover of forms

In shotcrete applications, there is less material waste and greater efficiency of product use.High electrical resistivity and impermeability

  • Significantly less rebound loss
  • Mitigates reinforcing steel corrosion
  • Improved bonding strength
  • Thicker applications with each nozzle pass

Technical Details & Test Data

Pozzolanic Reaction in a Cementitious System

SILICA FUME in contact with water goes into solution within an hour. The silica in solution forms an amorphous Silica rich, Ca poor, gel on the surface of the silica fume particles and
agglomerates. After time the Silica rich, Ca poor, coating dissolves and the agglomerates of silica fume reacts with free lime (CaOH2) to form calcium silicate hydrates (CSH). This reaction is called the pozzolanic reaction.

Safety & Health

Safety and Handling Precautions

SILICA FUME is generally considered a nuisance dust. Use and handling of silica fume does not represent a health risk when normal safety rules are observed. Direct contact may cause
irritation of eyes. Prolonged contact may cause skin irritation. Inhalation may cause respiratory irritation resulting in coughing and shortness of breath. This product may be harmful if swallowed. Do not get in eyes and avoid prolonged skin contact. Do not take internally. Wash thoroughly with water after handling.

Availability
  • Silica Fume is available in its as-produced, undensified form.
  • For greater convenience, densified silica fume, with twice the bulk density, provides many benefits. It is dustless, uniform, smooth, free of lumps and flows readily for bulk handling applications. Dry densified silica fume is the most economical product form for transportation, as its higher density allows bulk handling methods, and reduced shipping costs.

Storage & Handling

Storage

SILICA FUME should be kept dry, out of weather and the elements.

Handling

Bulk silica fume can be stored in ordinary cement silos and transported in bulk bag or cement tankers. It can be moved into cement storage silos and then handled with normal automated batching systems.
