Rumen protected proteins:
Protein is an important component of animal feed. A distinction is drawn between rumen-protected and non-protected or ‘rumen degradable’ protein. Both are essential. In contrast to degradable protein, rumen protected protein passes through the rumen and is not broken down by the micro-organisms in the rumen. As a result, these valuable protein ‘building blocks’ can be absorbed directly in the small intestine and protein efficiency is increased. Smaller amounts of (expensive) protein need to be fed in order to achieve the same milk yield.
