The biological reduction of nitrate (NO3) to nitrogen gas (N2) by facultative heterotrophic bacteria is called Denitrification. “Heterotrophic” bacteria need a carbon source as food to live. “Facultative” bacteria can get their oxygen by taking dissolved oxygen out of the water or by taking it off of nitrate molecules. Bacillus produce nitrate and nitrite reductases. Through a dissimilatory process (not incorporating into body mass), will convert nitrate, to nitrite, and then to N2. Note this will only happen anaerobically. You’re probably wondering how this could work, because there is a lot of oxygen in aquaculture. You are correct, but in the sludge it is anaerobic. So this is where the nitrate and nitrite will be converted.

But for a little insurance, let’s also factor in water chemistry. If customer is using Yucca to drop ammonia levels, that will likely come back to haunt them later. It binds ammonia, but eventually either there will be so much yucca sludge or sludge will break down and release the ammonia. If that’s not the case, and Yucca is not involved, then we’ll move forward.

If there's a build up of nitrite, water chemistry may be off. For good nitrification you need high oxygen, alkalinity and proper pH. Often with nitrification, if there is a build up of nitrite, it is because the pH is too high. If Nitrosomonas is doing its part converting ammonia to nitrite but at a higher pH such as 8.0 or higher, the Nitrobacter are less active at the higher pHs. So the Nitrobacter doesn’t convert the nitrite, as the same speed Nitrosomonas is converting ammonia. Adding Bacillus should help with the conversion of nitrate to nitrite and then to N2, but as insurance, I would also make sure their pH, oxygen and alkalinity is such to help the nitrifiers.

Also be careful as usual, not to overdose the system with the Bacillus, we don’t want to release ammonia at too high of a rate from the sludge. Start slowly and increase gradually. In these instances, if overdosed, things could get worse before they get better.
