  • Nutech Metal Primer is an acrylic coating, which demonstrates exceptional adhesion to a range of substrates including, all metal roofing surfaces, new/older galvanized metal, masonry surfaces, over colourbond and other coated metal sheet roofing products.
  • The coating provides good chemical resistance, weather ability. It is suitable for application by brush, roller, or airless spray.
  • Surfaces primed with Nutech Metal Primer perform exceptionally under conditions of hot, cold, and wet weather, provided they are correctly cleaned and top coated with a suitable protective finish.
Anti-Corrosion Water-Based Primer for Metal Surfaces
  • Nutech Anti-Corrosion Water-Based Co-Polymer Acrylic Metal Primer is designed as a primer for new and weathered galvanized and metal sheeting.
  • This primer is supplied standard in a mid-gray color suitable for top coating with NuFlex, TileFlex, or any other durable Nutech external acrylic coating.

Provisions
  • Substrate surface temperature must not be below 10°C and not exceed 50°C.
  • Adhesion may be affected when applied to cold or hot metal surfaces.
  • Ensure no surface moisture is present prior to application.
  • Consideration must be given to other climatic conditions such as wind and relative humidity.
  • Do not apply topcoat until the primer is completely dry.
  • Do not apply metal primer in very cold conditions.
  • Do not apply to extremely hot surfaces.
  • Failure to observe these provisions may affect coating adhesion.

Drinking water collection

  • Always disconnect water tanks before cleaning and coating.
  • Thoroughly flush gutters and allow several good rains to remove all overspray before reconnecting tanks.
  • Nutech paint recommends metal primer is applied by trained professionals.

Recommended Substrates

Metal Primer is a suitable undercoat / primer for NXT Cool Zone, NuFlex, Tileflex, Flexi-Shield Low Sheen and Flexi-Shield Matt.

Mixing/Thinning
  • Prior to Commencement - Stir thoroughly prior to use.
  • Maximum dilution - Do not dilute.
Test Patch

Conduct a small test patch in an inconspicuous area to ensure adequate product performance and adhesion.

Substrate Preparation
  • All surfaces must be clean from moss and lichen.
  • Refer to Nutech Hypo OR Nutech MossRid.
  • High pressure clean using a minimum of 3000psi.
  • Allow surface to dry thoroughly.
  • Improperly prepared surfaces may result in coating failure.
Steel Sheet & Roofing

Pre Coated Steel

  • Remove any loose, flaking paint, dirt & debris.
  • Where applicable, treat moss and lichen Nutech MossRid and allow to activate 7 days prior to coating.
  • Where applicable, degrease and clean using Nu-EcoSafe Degreaser in accordance with the relevant TDS.
  • High pressure clean the surface using a minimum of 3000 psi.
  • Allow surface to dry thoroughly.
  • Apply 1 coat of Metal Primer in accordance with this TDS.

Rusted Steel

  • Rust: Spot apply Nu EcoSafe Rust Converter in accordance with the relevant TDS.
  • Apply 1 coat of Metal Primer in accordance with this TDS.

Clean Bare Steel

  • If new sheets are heavily contaminated with oil and machine lubricants, the surface must be degreased using Nu-EcoSafe Degreaser in accordance with the relevant TDS.
  • Apply 1 coat of Metal Primer in accordance with this TDS.

Galvanized Steel

  • If new sheets are heavily contaminated with oil and machine lubricants, the surface must be degreased using Nu-EcoSafe Degreaser in accordance with the relevant TDS.
  • High pressure clean the surface using a minimum of 3000 psi.
  • Allow surface to dry thoroughly.
  • A suitable preparation solvent may also be used.
  • Apply 1 coat of Metal Primer in accordance with this TDS.
Aluminium Sheet & Roofing

Pre Coated Sheeting and Cladding

  • Remove any loose, flaking paint, dirt & debris.
  • Where applicable, treat moss and lichen Nutech MossRid and allow to activate 7 days prior to coating. Refer to the relevant TDS.
  • Where applicable, degrease and clean using Nu- EcoSafe Degreaser in accordance with the relevant TDS.
  • High pressure clean the surface using a minimum of 3000 psi.
  • Allow surface to dry thoroughly.
  • Apply 1 coat of Metal Primer in accordance with this TDS.

Weathered Bare Aluminum

  • Degrease and clean using Nu-EcoSafe Degreaser in accordance with the relevant TDS.
  • High pressure clean the surface using a minimum of 3000 psi.
  • Allow surface to dry thoroughly.
  • Apply 1 coat of Metal Primer in accordance with this TDS.

New, Mill Aluminum

  • Where applicable, remove protective film.
  • Degrease and clean using Nu-EcoSafe Degreaser in accordance with the relevant TDS.
  • Allow surface to dry thoroughly.

Mechanical abrade and repeat cleaning procedure as outlined above or etch using a suitable etching solution, following the supplier’s Technical Recommendations.

  • Allow surface to dry thoroughly.
  • Apply 1 coat of Metal Primer in accordance with this TDS.
Application Equipment
  • Airless spray (Recommended) - Spray tip size is 523 - 525.

Application Procedure

Prior to coating:

  • In cold weather, new tile pointing must be adequately cured.
  • Weather conditions must be favorable as rain, moisture or dew may cause damage.
  • Do not apply in extreme heat. Observe the Provisions in this TDS.

Observing dry times, curing conditions and application spread rates, spray apply 1 even consistent coat making sure fan pattern correctly overlaps.

Drying Time

Ideal ambient conditions 25°C at 60% relative humidity. In cooler temperatures or high humidity, dry times will be extended.

Curing Conditions Consideration
  • Same day top coating in winter or cold weather is not recommended and may result in coating failure unless completely dry.
  • Avoid application late in the day if there is a risk of rapid drop in temperature or overnight dew or frost.

Clean Up
  • Protecting our environment is important to Nutech Paints. Clean up with clean fresh water.
  • Do not pour leftover paint down the drain.
  • Unwanted paint should be kept in a sealed container and then disposed of via special waste collection services.
  • Empty paint containers should be left open in a well-ventilated area to dry out.
  • Dispose of empty paint containers in accordance with local authority’s guidelines. Always check with your local council first.

Safety & Health

First Aid
  • In case of eye contact, flush thoroughly with water for at least 15 minutes.
