Boosts infant immunity
A strong immune system relies on well-balanced gut microbiome. Probiotics are good bacteria that can help support the development and maintenance of a healthy immune system.
Not all probiotics are proven to have the same benefits. Awareness of the specific benefits of particular probiotic strains and education on product efficacy is increasing. Fonterra probiotics are clinically tested to provide immune protection and other health benefits.
The incidence of food allergies is growing
Prevalence of food allergies is a growing health concern, not only in Western countries but in rapidly developing countries. In China, rising C-section rates, antibiotics abuse, and air pollution are placing babies at increased risk of allergies.
NZ Clinical Study: In a two-year clinical trial with 425 infants aged 0-24 months, supplementation with SureStart™ LactoB HN001™ demonstrated:
- long term protection against eczema
- reduced risk of respiratory allergies, an
- extended beyond the treatment period and up to 11 years of age (ongoing follow-up)
Health during pregnancy is important for both mother and baby
The right nutrition is an important part of maintaining health and wellbeing. Emerging evidence suggests SureStart™ LactoB HN001™ helps to reduce the risk of gestational diabetes and postnatal depression when taken during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Gestational diabetes is a severe and neglected threat to maternal and child health
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) occurs during pregnancy and can affect the health of mother and baby.
Complications include uncontrolled blood sugar levels, high blood pressure (preeclampsia) and a typically larger baby. It is estimated that GDM affects 7-10% of all pregnancies worldwide.4 More than half of women with a history of GDM develop type 2 diabetes within 5-10 years post-birth.
Depression during and after pregnancy is a common and serious condition
Depression is a mental illness affecting 322 million people worldwide, and as much as a third of the Chinese population5. Women are more vulnerable to depression, and this intensifies during and after pregnancy.
It is not uncommon for mothers to suffer from baby blues after having a baby. Generally, this will last a day or two, whereas postnatal depression is a more serious condition, that not only impacts the mother (often causing stress and anxiety) but can reduce bonding with the baby.
Globally, 10% of pregnant women and 13% of women post-birth experience a mental health problem.5 In China, 6-28% of women suffer from depression during pregnancy, while 10-28% suffer postnatal depression5.
NZ Clinical Study: A study with 423 pregnant women taking SureStart™ LactoB HN001™ from the second trimester until 6 months following birth demonstrated:
- Reduced prevalence of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) during pregnancy, and
- Significantly reduced symptoms of postnatal depression and anxiety.
