Seaweed has several bioactive compounds and nutrients. As a complex ingredient, the activity of a combination of these compounds may explain the observed effects. Focusing around a critical class of compounds, a substantial body of scientific evidence has been generated to demonstrate that polysaccharides exert positive (prebiotic effects) on cellulolytic and lactic acid bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract while inhibiting some commonly occurring pathogenic bacteria such as C. difficile and E. coli. Polysaccharides also have a stimulatory effect on the innate immune system. The net effect is a better balance of the gut microbiome and reduced inflammation leading to improved gut morphology (crypt/villus maturity), and nutrient absorption.
