Applications & Uses

Herbicide Target Species
Directions For Use

It is an offense for users of this product to cause residues exceeding the relevant MRL in the Food Notice: Maximum Residue Levels for Agricultural Compounds FORESTRY - grass and broadleaf weeds Radiata Pine, Douglas fir and Eucalyptus species (E.delegatensis, fastigata and siligna) Assett is a selective herbicide for the use in either pre-planting or over newly planted “bare-rooted” trees. Weeds controlled include Yorkshire fog, browntop, sweet vernal, ryegrass spp, Poa spp, cocksfoot, catsear, chickweed, seedling gorse, Scotch thistle, nodding thistle, clovers, annual grasses and broadleaf weeds. Rate of Application (Broadcast): 15 - 20 liters of Assett in 150 - 300 liters of water per hectare. Use the higher rate on gorse seedlings. A wetting agent such as Synergy ™ Wetter Sticker should be added at manufacturer’s label rates. Rate of Application (Spot Application): Calibrate equipment carefully to deliver 1.5 - 2ml of Assett per square meter in sufficient water to obtain good coverage. Treat 2 square meters around each tree where untreated surrounding vegetation could become rank and collapse to affect the planted tree. Include a wetting agent such as Synergy ™ Wetter Sticker at manufacturer’s label rates to the spray mixture. A repeat application can be made 12 months later to release slow growing trees. Spotgun: Mix 110ml of Assett in 1 liter water and apply 15 - 20ml of the mixture per square meter. Knapsack: Mix 55ml of Assett in 1 liter of water and apply 30 - 40ml of the mixture per square meter. Time of application: Apply either to bare ground or existing vegetation not exceeding 10cm in height prior to spring growth in September. Note: For applications made later in the spring season, or for the control of difficult to kill perennial grasses like paspalum, kikuyu, couch and Mercer grass, the addition of an approved selective grass killer at label rates is recommended. LUCERNE (established) - grass and broadleaf weeds Assett is absorbed through the roots and leaves of shepherds purse, storksbill, chickweed, subterranean clover, dovesfoot, barley grass, Kentucky bluegrass and some other annual seedling weeds. Rate of Application: 1.5 - 2 liters of Assett in mixture with 2 - 3 liters of paraquat 20% a.i., eg, PQ200 ™, per hectare. Use the higher rate when clover is a problem and longer residual activity is required. Do not exceed recommended rates of application as Lucerne yields may be adversely affected. Time of Application: Apply to closely grazed Lucerne stands that are at least 2 years old. Do not spray immediately following heavy grazing – allow a few days for weed growth to freshen up. Apply during the winter months when lucerne is completely dormant, but not when frost is still on the foliage or when ground conditions are excessively wet.

Withholding Periods

 Lucerne…4 weeks

MAIZE AND SWEETCORN - annual broadleaf weeds Assett is absorbed through the leaves and roots of redroot, black nightshade, fathen and willow weed. Note: Some fathen plants may be resistant to products containing terbuthylazine, and the use of a specific post-emergence herbicide such as Bandit™ may be necessary to remove them. Rates and Times of Application - Pre-emergence: 3.6 liters of Assett per hectare. The addition of Dual® Gold at label rates is necessary for the control of annual grass weeds. Apply to a freshly prepared seedbed after crop sowing but before emergence. Post-emergence: 3 liters of Assett in 200 - 300 liters water per hectare to actively growing weeds no more than 5cm high. The addition of a wetting agent should be made at manufacturer’s label rates. ORCHARD CROPS (CITRUS, GRAPES, KIWIFRUIT, PIPFRUIT) - annual broadleaf weeds Note: Do NOT apply to trees or vines less than 1 year old, or where trees or vines are growing in light sandy soil.

Rates And Times of Application

Pre-emergence: 6 - 8 liters of Assett in 200 - 300 liters of water per hectare. Apply in spring to a weed free soil. Post-emergence: 6 - 8 liters of Assett in 200 - 300 liters of water per hectare. To control established weeds, tank mix with a contact herbicide such as Bash™ or PQ200. PEAS - annual broadleaf weeds Rate of Application: 1.5 - 2 liters of Assett in 200 - 300 liters of water per hectare. Use the higher rate under dry soil conditions. Time of Application (pre-emergence): Apply to a freshly prepared seedbed after crop sowing but before emergence. A minimum of 10mm rainfall or irrigation within 1 week following application is necessary for herbicidal activity. Do not use Assett in soil low in organic matter, or of a very sandy or stony texture.

Application Methods

Assett is non-corrosive and almost non-abrasive. Assett can be applied with conventional ground and spot spraying equipment. Do not use strainers finer than 300 micrometers. Wash equipment thoroughly after use.

Mixing

Stir before use. Assett mixes readily with water. Pour the correct quantity into the partly filled tank then add the remaining water with agitation. The spray mixture should be kept agitated before and during spraying after a stoppage. Unused spray mixture may settle overnight. Note: When using mixtures of Assett and paraquat 20% a.i. add the Assett to the partly filled tank first, mix thoroughly, then add the paraquat and remainder of the water with agitation.

Soil Residues

To minimize soil residues which could affect subsequent crops, areas treated with Assett should be plowed and cross-cultivated between crops to ensure maximum dispersal of residues. Because residues may result from the use of Assett, certain crops, for example tomatoes, cucurbits, brassicas, lettuce and beans, should not be planted in areas previously treated with Assett without first obtaining advice from your local Orion AgriScience representative.

Resistance Management

GROUP C1 HERBICIDE

Assett contains terbuthylazine, a group C1 herbicide belonging to the triazine chemical family. Some naturally occurring weeds may become resistant when excessive use of the same herbicide occurs. To prevent or delay the development of resistance, use in tank mixes and/or rotate use with herbicides with a different mode of action. Consult http://resistance.nzpps.org/index.php for alternative modes of action and details of resistance management strategies (if any) for the crops listed on the label.
