Features & Benefits

General Information

Dominator is a selective herbicide for the control of a wide range of broadleaf weeds in grain and silage maize. Dominator can be applied either pre or post emergence. Dominator is absorbed through the leaves, shoots and roots of weeds, interfering with carotenoid biosynthesis. Complete weed death may take up to 2 weeks. Transient bleaching may occur after post emergent applications if undertaken when the crop is stressed, eg, drought. The crop will outgrow this and develop normally. Yield will not be affected. Caution: Do NOT use on sweetcorn or popcorn. Weeds Controlled: Bathhurst bur, black nightshade, chickweed, dandelion, fathen*, fennel, fishtail oxalis, galinsoga, hairy nightshade, mallow, redroot, seedling docks, spurrey, stagger weed, twin cress, willow weed, wire weed (*includes triazine resistant fathen). Dominator is only partially effective against grass weeds. It is recommended that Dominator is used in conjunction with other herbicides to provide broad spectrum weed control (See under ‘Rates of Application’ below). Ingredients: Dominator contains 480 g/L of mesotrione as the active ingredient, and 14% of ethylene glycol as antifreeze.

Applications & Uses

Herbicide Target Species
Spillage

Exclude non-essential people from the area. Wear protective clothing and prevent material from entering waterways. Absorb spill with inert material such as soil, sand, etc, and place in a waste container. Wash area with water and detergent, and absorb with further inert material. Dispose of safely to a suitable landfill.

Directions For Use

Pre-emergent: Use 350 – 450 ml of Dominator per hectare. To increase the spectrum of weed activity, use in combination with 2 liters of Atraflow™ or 1.1 Kg of Atragranz® 90WG, 1.3 - 2 liters of Dual® Gold, or 2.2 - 3 liters of Sylon® 840 or Ace™, per hectare. Post emergent: Use 150 - 200ml of Dominator per hectare. To increase the spectrum of weed activity, use in combination with 1 – 1.5 liters of Atraflow or 0.5 – 0.8 Kg of Atragranz 90WG, 0.75 – 1.5 liters of Banvel®, or 40 g of Beacon® per hectare For optimal post emergent weed control, particularly against grasses such as summer grass and smooth witchgrass, Dominator, on its own or with tank mixes, must be used in conjunction with a crop oil adjuvant such as Synoil™ at 1% by volume of the spray mix.

Application Timing

Pre emergent. Apply to the freshly prepared seedbed immediately after planting and before crop emergence. Post emergent: Dominator is most effective when applied to weeds up to the 8 leaf stage. Providing the spray has dried on the foliage, light rain after post emergent spraying will not affect the results. Otherwise, rain within 3 hours of treatment may reduce effectiveness.

Application Methods

Boom spraying: Use 100 – 300 liters of water per hectare. Use the higher volumes when used in conjunction with other herbicides. Do not use strainers finer than 300 micrometers. Dry conditions following application may reduce pre-emergent effectiveness. If activating rain is not received within 7 – 10 days after a pre-emergent application, rotary hoeing is recommended to activate the herbicide.

Mixing

Shake well prior to use. Pour Dominator into the spray tank half filled with water, and add the remainder of the water while agitating. Keep mechanical agitator or bypass running while filling, during spraying and before recommencing spraying after a stoppage. Unused spray mixture will settle out. If tank mixing, add next product(s) immediately after Dominator.

Soil Residues

To minimize soil residues which could affect subsequent crops, areas treated with Dominator should be plowed and cross cultivated between crops to ensure maximum dispersal of residues. Because residues may result from the use of Dominator, planting of certain crops should be delayed to allow residues to decay. Allow at least 6 months before sowing white clover or ryegrass. Allow at least 12 months for legume crops such as lucerne, peas and red clover. For further advice contact a representative of Orion AgriScience.

Withholding Period

It is an offense for users of this product to cause residues exceeding the relevant MRL in the New Zealand (Maximum Residue Limits of Agricultural Compounds) Food Standards. Grain maize and green feed/silage: 70 days from the last application.

Resistance Management

GROUP F2 HERBICIDE

Dominator contains the active ingredient mesotrione, which belongs to the triketone chemical group. Some naturally occurring weeds may become resistant when excessive use of the same herbicide group occurs. Consult http://resistance.nzpps.org/index.php for alternative modes of action and details of resistance management strategies (if any) for the weeds or crops listed on the label.
