Product Information

A pyrethroid insecticide for the control of a range of insects in FRUIT, VEGETABLES and other FIELD CROPS, PASTURE, and PUBLIC HEALTH.

Active Ingredient: 100 g/liter alpha-cypermethrin in the form of an emulsifiable concentrate

General Information

Cipher is a fast acting pyrethroid insecticide with good residual effect. It can be used against a range of insect pests in agricultural and public health situations, including ants, aphids, cockroaches, caterpillars, flies, silverfish, spiders and thrips. As Cipher is not a systemic insecticide, good plant coverage is essential.

Applications & Uses

Application Technique
Spillage

Extinguish any ignition sources. Exclude non-essential people from the area. Wear protective clothing and prevent material from entering waterways. Absorb spill with inert material such as soil, sand, etc. Place in waste container. Wash area with water, and absorb with further inert material. Dispose of safely to a suitable landfill.

Application Methods

Cipher can be applied with conventional agricultural boom spraying equipment. Apply in 300 – 700 L of water per hectare. Use a non-ionic wetting agent, such as Synergy™ Wetter Sticker on difficult to wet crops such as onions and vegetable brassicas. A knapsack sprayer is suitable for public health applications.

Mixing

Cipher mixes readily with water. To ensure mixing pour the correct amount into the partly filled tank and add the remainder of the water while agitating. Agitate thoroughly before and during spraying and before spraying after a stoppage. Do not mix with strongly alkaline products such as Bordeaux mixture or lime sulfur. Otherwise, Cipher is compatible with most commonly used pesticides.

Withholding Periods

It is an offense for users of this product to cause residues exceeding the relevant MRL in the Food Notice: Maximum Residue Levels for Agricultural Compounds Tomatoes – 3 days. Vegetable brassicas – 3 days. Onions – 14 days. Sweetcorn – 7 days. Do not graze or feed livestock on treated maize or sweetcorn stubble within 14 days of treatment. Do not graze pasture within 7 days of treatment or cut for stockfeed within 14 days of treatment. Do not apply to stonefruit after the appearance of the first flower. Do not apply to kiwifruit after cracking of flower buds (first visible petals).

Resistance Management

GROUP 3 INSECTICIDE

Cipher contains the synthetic pyrethroid alpha-cypermethrin. Resistance to this insecticide could develop from excessive use. To minimize this risk, use strictly in accordance with label instructions. Consult http://resistance. nzpps.org/index.php for alternative modes of action and details of resistance management strategies (if any) for the insect pests listed on the label. To minimize resistance problems: • Rotate pesticides during the season to use others (i.e., non – pyrethroid) with a different mode of action • Avoid unnecessary spraying • Maintain good cultural practices • Vegetable brassicas – Use in alternation with an insecticide with a different mode of action • Aphids – Use in alternation with an insecticide with a different mode of action • Corn earworm / Tomato fruitworm – Do not use before 7 January • Diamond back moth caterpillars – Refer to NZPPS website above • Onion thrips - Do not use before late January. Use in alternation with an insecticide with a different mode of action .

Directions For Use

Use high water rate to ensure penetration to base of crop. Corn earworm – Apply at first sign of caterpillars on silks. Repeat treatment every 10 – 14 days as required. Greasy cutworm – Apply at first sign of seedling damage. Apply preferably in the early evening, and direct the spray to the plant base and surrounding soil. See Resistance Management section
Onions Onion thrips 150 – 200 mL/ha in 500 – 600 liters water/ha Apply immediately pest appears. Repeat treatment every 14 days as required. See Resistance Management section.
Pasture Tasmanian grass grub 100 – 150 mL/ha Apply immediately pest and pasture damage appears. Use higher rate when larvae are more than 1cm long.
Red-legged earth mite 50 mL/ha Apply immediately damage (leaf bleaching) appears, especially on legume seedlings.
Stonefruit Green peach aphid 20 – 25 ml/100 liters of water Apply before flowering only. Apply immediately pest appears. Repeat treatment every 14 days as required. Use higher rate when aphid numbers are high. See Resistance Management section

Crop Pest Rate Critical Comments
Tomatoes (Field) Tomato fruitworm 20 – 30 ml/100 liters of water with a minimum water rate of 600 liters/ha Use higher rate when pest activity is high or larvae are more than 10 mm long. See Resistance Management section.
Trees and Vines (Non-fruit bearing) – Avocados, berryfruit, grapes, kiwifruit, pipfruit, tamarillos Grass grub beetle 50 ml/100 liters/ water Apply immediately beetles appear. Repeat treatment every 7 days as required. Apply at dusk as fine spray to ensure complete foliar coverage.
Vegetable brassicas Diamond-back moth White butterfly Tomato fruitworm Greasy cutworm 200 – 250 mL/ha in minimum of 700 liters of water/ha Commence spraying immediately after transplanting. Repeat treatment at 14 day intervals. See Resistance Management section.
