General Information

Simatop is a selective pre-emergence herbicide which will control a wide range of annual grasses and broadleaf weeds in a number of horticultural crops, orchards and forestry. It is recommended also as a mixture with paraquat for selective weed control in established lucerne and for non-selective control of barley grass. Simatop is only taken up by the roots, and not the leaves, of germinating annual broadleaf weeds, and therefore application must be made either to freshly cultivated soil or bare ground free of trash. Where weeds have already established in orchard and vineyard situations, the addition of either paraquat, diquat or glyphosate should be made according to the appropriate approved product label recommendations. Note: When using these mixtures for weed control where young fruit trees or vines have not yet developed brown bark, the spray must be shielded to prevent contact with immature green bark or damage will occur.

Applications & Uses

Herbicide Target Species
Spillage

Exclude non-essential people from the area. Wear protective clothing and prevent material from entering waterways. Absorb spill with inert material such as soil, sand, etc, and place in a waste container. Wash area with water, and absorb with further inert material. Dispose of safely to a suitable landfill.

Directions For Use

It is an offense for users of this product to cause residues exceeding the relevant MRL in the Food Notice: Maximum Residue Levels for Agricultural Compounds.

Rates And Timing of Application

ESTABLISHED LUCERNE Situation: For the control of seedling storksbill, daisies, chickweed, barley grass and other broadleaf and grass weeds. Rate: 1.5 - 2 liters in a mixture with 2 - 3 liters of paraquat 20% a.i. eg, PQ200™, in 200 - 300 liters of water per hectare. Time of Application: Apply to closely grazed Lucerne stands during the winter months when the Lucerne is dormant and the plants have developed a crown. Do not apply when frost is still on the foliage or when ground conditions are excessively wet. Do not spray immediately following heavy grazing – allow a few days for weed growth to freshen up.

HORTICULTURAL CROPS

Established Crop Rates per Hectare Critical Comments
Asparagus 4 liters Apply to freshly cultivated soil prior to spear emergence. Do not apply during the cutting season
Berry fruit 4 liters Apply during dormant period.
Broad Beans 2 liters Apply immediately after sowing. Do not use on small seeded varieties such as Coles Early Dwarf growing on light soils.
Citrus 4 liters Apply around established trees only.
Grapes 4 liters Apply around established trees only.
Pip fruit 4 liters Apply around established trees only.
Strawberries 3 liters Apply to weed free inter-rows. If crop is not planted through black polythene, check varietal tolerance before overspraying.

FORESTRY - Radiata Pine Situation: For the control of grass weeds. Rate: 6.5 liters in a mixture with 6 liters paraquat 20% a.i. eg, PQ200, in 300 - 400 liters water per hectare as a pre-planting application. Timing: Apply to a strip 1 meter wide along proposed planting lines. Application may be made at any time up to 1 week prior to planting. It is advisable to delay planting for 2 - 3 days after spraying so that planting lines will be clearly visible. Best results will be obtained when grasses are well grazed down before application. BARLEY GRASS - Non selective Situation: For the control of barley grass in stockyards, stock camps, fence lines, around farm buildings, drain verges and particularly fence lines bordering grass or clover seed crops, hay paddocks and other crop paddocks. Rate: For spot spraying, use 160ml with 300ml of paraquat 20% a.i. eg, PQ200, per 100 liters of water applied as a gun application. Timing: Apply to barley grass at the early green seed head stage. Ensure complete wetting of plants. Follow up treatment of any seedling regrowth should be undertaken during the following winter period. The Simatop plus paraquat mixture is not recommended for selective control of barley grass in pastures.

Application Methods

Simatop is non-corrosive and almost non-abrasive. Simatop can be applied with conventional spraying equipment. Do not use strainers finer than 300 micrometers. Wash equipment thoroughly after use.

Mixing

Simatop mixes readily with water. Pour the correct quantity into the partly filled tank then add the remaining water while agitating. The spray mixture should be kept agitated before and during spraying and before spraying after a stoppage. Note: When using mixtures of Simatop and paraquat add the Simatop to the partly filled tank first, mix thoroughly, then add the paraquat and the remainder of the water with agitation.

Soil Conditions/Rainfall

Apply to moist soil for best results. Do not use on dry soils unless adequate irrigation or rainfall immediately follows application.

Soil Residues

Because residues resulting from the use of the product could adversely affect certain susceptible crops, for example tomatoes, cucurbits, dwarf beans, lettuce and beetroot, do not plant crops other than those recommended for treatment on this label without first obtaining advice from an Orion AgriScience representative or distributor. To minimize soil residue effects, areas treated with Simatop should be plowed and thoroughly cultivated before sowing any following crops. Even after plowing certain crops may still be susceptible to Simatop residues.

Resistance Management

GROUP C1 HERBICIDE

Simatop contains simazine, a group C1 herbicide belonging to the triazine chemical family. Some naturally occurring weeds may become resistant when excessive use of the same herbicide occurs. To prevent or delay the development of resistance, use in tank mixes and/or rotate use with herbicides with a different mode of action. Consult http://resistance. nzpps.org/index.php for alternative modes of action and details of resistance management strategies (if any) for the crops listed on the label.
