Applications & Uses

Recommended Applications

Teraflow® 5000 contributes to a smooth film in water-based latex systems, urethanes, water-reducible and water-dispersible alkyd and polyester formulations for both air-dry and baking applications, as well as water-based epoxy-amine systems. Teraflow® 5000 is also recommended for water-based flexo ink applications to improve appearance.

Teraflow® 5000 through its well-balanced surface-active functionality provides an excellent combination of hydrophilic and hydrophobic attributes, allowing the formulator to optimize the dispersion of almost all pigments and extenders, including such difficult-to-disperse pigments as phthalo blue, phthalo green and carbon black. The product reduces surface tension and produces effective, efficient pigment wetting characteristics for both organic and inorganic pigments, including organic reds and red iron oxides.

Recommended Use Levels

For maximum effectiveness in dispersing pigments, Teraflow® 5000 should be added to the mill base in the range of 5% to 9% by total weight, depending on the pigments used and other surfactants and vehicles utilized. When used as the sole grinding resin in mill bases, Teraflow® 5000 is often used in the range of 5% to 12% based on total weight. The formulator should evaluate in each system and with each pigment the optimum amount to use and the effect on the properties and performance of the final formulation. To promote flow and leveling and to control surface defects, Teraflow® 5000 is recommended in the range of 0.5% to 2.0% based on total resin solids. The best results can be achieved by optimizing the level of Teraflow® 5000 used in the formulation, which can be accomplished through experimental design in the formulation.

When used for flow and leveling, Teraflow® 5000 can reduced with water or a combination of water, solvent and/or resin to ease its mixing and handling. This reduced combination can be incorporated into the let-down or as a post-add.

Compatibility

Teraflow® 5000 is designed to promote flow and leveling, aid in pigment wetting and dispersion, and reduce the formation of craters, fisheyes, pinholes and orange peel in water-based coatings and inks. Because of its versatility, Teraflow® 5000 can be used in place of some surfactants in the formulation, particularly those that may be water-sensitive, and in applications where substrate wetting and adhesion is important.

Teraflow® 5000 contains no silicone and no ethylene or propylene glycol; the product is 100% active. Teraflow® 5000 acts as a high-performance grinding vehicle for both organic and inorganic pigments for a wide variety of water-based systems, including urethanes, alkyds, acrylics, polyesters and epoxies. Dispersions based on Teraflow® 5000 offer the benefits of stability with high pigment/binder ratios, compatibility with a wide variety of resins, and a lower level of grinding resin with both efficiency and formulating flexibility.
