- Process
Extrusion can produce PET pellets from the PET flakes. This results in similar chemical and physical properties as the primary raw material on. Prior to the extrusion, the flakes come in a vacuum dryer at 130 to 180 °C and are dried during several hours and condensated to improve properties. In the extruder, the flakes are melted, pressed and formed into strands (spaghetti). These are briefly cooled in a water bath and then grinded. The properties of the PET granulate can be further improved with an additional processing step. This processing step, the solid granules are crystallized and heated in the so-called solid state condensation(SSP). This again increases the length of the molecule chains by other connections. The perceived improvement of rheological performance is measured in intrinsic viscosity, referred to as IV. Various new goods can be made out of these PET granules. The spectrum is similar to that of the PET flakes. The granules are produced according to the requirements of the customer (such as IV, mesh size of the filters used in the production), more specific options are available at PET granules. These may vary from customer to customer.
PET is processed above 250 °C and can be molded in almost any imaginable form. Beverage bottles are a nice example. In a first step, preforms are produced by an injection molding process which already has the screw on thread for the bottle caps. Just before bottling, these preforms are heated to a temperature above 100 °C. As they are soften these can be stretched with compressed air and then blown into the shape of the bottle (Stetchblowmoulding). Similar to the melt processing is the production of foil or containers. For this the PET melt is extruded through a slit nozzle and is cooled and pressed with help of rollers in the final form.
