Aquamag® is a high-quality magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2) slurry that is a Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) chemical due to its non-hazardous and environmentally-friendly nature. Exclusively manufactured in the United States, from source to end-product, Premier Magnesia, LLC maintains the highest production standards when it comes to reactivity, consistency and reliable supply, ensuring a delivered product that you can depend on to meet your needs. AQUAMAG is considered a weak base that has a pH of 10.5 in its natural, delivered state. Nevertheless, it acts as a strong buffer, capable of neutralizing acids of all concentrations to roughly the 9.0 pH range.

Industries Served

Food & Beverage

  • Food and beverage production is an alphabet of products, processes, technologies, and regulatory compliances.  Quality, quantity, efficiency, and productivity are the drivers of profitability. Teamwork and partnerships in the supply chain result in an industry challenged from cost of inputs to dependability of outputs.
  • Because of both Premier’s high purity magnesia-technology employed in-process, and our team of technical experts, we have been helping food and beverage plants to not only optimize their efficiency, but also meet all state and federal environmental regulations associated with specific waste streams.
  • AQUAMAG® has become the preferred reagent for treatment of industrial wastewater in food and beverage plants because of its ability to maintain pH and provide alkalinity in biological waste water systems. Offering up to 27% more alkalinity than lime or 37% more caustic soda has made it the most chemically-effective and cost-effective option for facilities.

Power Plants

  • Whether associated with acid gas remediation or slag control, AQUAMAG® is extremely effective at increasing efficiency at power plants and reducing environmental impact. In addition, on their own they are safe products to be handled and employed by personnel.
  • When utilized in coal-fired or oil-fired power plants, AQUAMAG® can help sequester SOx gas particles as they form and improve SOx gas removal efficiencies. As flue gas cools, SO3 can combine with condensed water vapor droplets to form sulfuric acid (H2SO4). Sulfuric acid will increase the visibility of the stack discharge and can corrode exposed surfaces on the air heater, Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP), wet scrubber, stack discharge and connecting ductwork. Further, when AQUAMAG® is added to the fuel-source, a higher melting point slag is produced that is more friable and less adhesive inside the boiler or boiler tubes, improving performance and longevity.
  • AQUAMAG® is an effective reagent in helping power plants improve efficiency of their operations as well as meet environmental standards. The two primary applications for AQUAMAG® include slag reduction and SOx mitigation.

Slag Reduction:

AQUAMAG®, when added to the fuel inside a coal-fired plant, replaces the calcium (Ca2+) and sodium (Na+) ions present within the crystal structure of the slag. This produces a higher melting point slag that is more friable and less adhesive inside the boiler and on the boiler tubes. This reduction of slag accumulation inside boiler tubes helps plants to avoid costly boiler tube cleaning shutdowns.

Advantages:

  • Reduced downtime and costs incurred by boiler tube slagging
  • Increased heat transfer due to a reduction in slagging
  • Safer operation of the boiler
  • Reduction of SO2 going to the SCR unit

SOx Mitigation: Sulfur Trioxide (SO3) production occurs during coal combustion when the sulfur inherent within this coal is oxidized into Sulfur Dioxide (SO2), and to a lesser degree, SO3. This SO2 can be subsequently oxidized to SO3 in the presence of a catalyst, such as iron oxide or vanadium. Unfortunately, these catalysts are often used in Selective Catalytic Reactors (SCRs) and are often present in fly ash particles and slagged metal surfaces. When the flue gas cools, SO3 can combine with condensed water vapor droplets to form sulfuric acid (H2SO4). Sulfuric acid will increase the visibility of the stack discharge and can corrode exposed surfaces on the air heater, Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP), wet scrubber, stack discharge and connecting ductwork.

Advantages:

  • Significantly reduced rates of corrosion of the flue gas ductwork
  • Reduced opacity of the boiler discharge stack
  • Capability to utilize lower-cost fuels with a higher sulfur content without increasing the opacity of the boiler discharge stack or reducing the boiler performance as a result of slagging
  • Potential to operate the SCR and air heater at lower gas temperatures – thereby realizing heat rate improvements as well as enhancing both SO3 mitigation at the SCR and removal at the ESP
  • Formation of easily-removed soluble salt byproducts
  • Significantly decrease the formation of ammonium bisulfate at the SCR

Pulp & Paper

  • The world may be going digital, but that hasn’t slowed the demand for pulp, paper, and paperboard products from an industry focused on production efficiency for profitability. Growth has been propelled by paperboard shipping boxes, and increasing interest in consumer product packaging made of recyclable pulp and paper materials.  Sustainability and recycling initiatives supported by communities and businesses continue to generate tons of recycled newsprint, magazines, mixed office waste, and recyclable paperboards.
  • AQUAMAG® has proven to be advantageous in several pulp and paper applications including deinking, peroxide bleaching, and SOx scrubbing. Because it can be used as the sole source of alkalinity (providing 27% more alkalinity than caustic soda or other alternatives), many manufacturers are turning to AQUAMAG® treatment for partial or full replacement of their current chemicals.
  • The benefits? Improved reactivity and efficiency of using our high-quality controlled products, total lower chemical costs, effective waste treatment, and improved runnability of equipment.

Manufacturing

  • Manufacturers across multiple industries are faced with a long list of challenges including mitigating risks, maximizing asset values, strengthen supply chains, ensure sustainability, secure the future, and meet or exceed ever-increasing legislative regulations and corporate obligations. Increasingly, the stated mission of manufacturers is to source, transport, process, reduce-reuse-recycle, treat as needed and dispose of properly, any and all production input and output waste products in proven ways and without harm to people or our environment.
  • Whether associated with process efficiency, environmental treatment regulations, or product output, AQUAMAG® can offer safe, quality solutions to dozens of needs within industrial manufacturing. Uses and benefits of AQUAMAG® applications include increasing efficiency in wastewater treatment, mitigating air pollution and reducing in boiler slag.  In addition, AQUAMAG® is often used as a raw material for the production of several magnesia chemicals for various markets.
