"Royal Smilde Natura is part of Royal Smilde, a real family business, the oldest in Heerenveen. We have a rich history and the method of collecting and returning also goes back more than a hundred years, but in a slightly different form. In 1863 Arend Smilde started a butcher's shop on Herenwal in Heerenveen. In those days, people bought a pound of raw fat from the butcher and melted it at home in a pan to fry meat or fry potatoes. In the summer there was a risk of spoilage with this raw fat, so the family business decided to carry out the melting itself. This melted beef fat was packed in cans under the brand name Natura and thus the 'concept' was born."
