- Product Highlights
The pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) has been extensively used in traditional medicine since many centuries. The extracts of different parts of plant such as juice, seed and peel have been reported to exhibit strong antioxidant activity. Pomegranate fruit rind is rich in phenolic compounds such as ellagic acid - a known antioxidant.
Plant polyphenols play an important role in human nutrition and are implicated with numerous biological properties like antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Among these, ellagic acid, a dimeric derivative of gallic acid, occurs in several fruits and nuts either in free form as ellagic acid-glycosides or bound as ellagitannins.

- Applications
A preclinical study reported that the skin-whitening effect of pomegranate fruit rind extract due to inhibition of the proliferation of melanocytes and melanin synthesis by tyrosinase.
n a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 4 weeks supplementation of ellagic acid rich pomegranate extract at two doses (100 and 200 mg/day) showed protective and ameliorative effects against UV irradiation-induced pigmentation of human skin. Additionally, number of subjects from both the dosage groups reported improvement in ‘brightness of the face’ and ‘stains and freckles’ compared to placebo.
