    Features & Benefits

    Product Highlights
    • Powerful Against Blemishes Combines the benefits of both the alphahydroxy acid (lactic acid (LA) and glycolic acid (GA), and the beta-hydroxy acid, salicylic acid (SA), for the most desired effect.
    • Target Delivery: Due to its adhesive properties, SalSphere® technology is designed to deposit the actives on the surface of the skin where they are specifically required to exert their desired action.
    • Gentle, Slow Release:With the controlled release technology, SS CS releases the acids slowly and gently on the skin, therefore it is recommended for users with sensitive skin.
    Product Background

Exfoliation is a crucial aspect of a healthy skin care regiment that resolves various skin problems such as blemishes, clogged pores, and dry skin. Without exfoliation, dead skin cells build up and trap oil in the skin, creating an environment conducive to breakouts.

Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) such as lactic acid (LA) work at the upper epidermal layer to loosen dead skin cells and promote skin cell turnover. LA also moisturizes the skin and stimulates collagen production to leave skin looking supple and rejuvenated.

Beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) such as salicylic acid exfoliate the skin and clear clogged pores to promote healthier, clearer skin. After several months of daily use, BHA can even decrease the appearance of wrinkles and age spots.

There are several challenges when it comes to formulating with acids such as AHAs and BHAs:

    • Low pH of acids can cause dryness and irritation.
    • Low water solubility of BHA may require the use of additional, potentially irritating ingredients to suspend it in a formulation. These factors make it difficult to create stable, skinfriendly emulsions for topical use.
    Product Information

SalSphere™ Clear Skin is a sub-micron technology that encapsulates the LA and SA in spheres 0.1 to 0.3 microns in diameter . When a product containing SalSphere™ Clear Skin is applied to the skin, it adheres and partitions into the upper layer of the epidermis where it slowly dissolves and releases the acids . The hydrophilic nature of the shell helps to suspend the SalSphere™ in formulations.

SalSphere™ Clear Skin is a delivery system that reduces blemishes and other skin irregularities by combining the power of the alpha-hydroxy acid, lactic acid, and the beta-hydroxy acid, salicylic acid.

    Efficacy Tests

A lotion containing SalSphere™ Clear Skin (0.1% LA and 0.5% SA) was compared to a lotion containing the acids in free form . Skin pH was measured at each application site and on bare skin for six hours. The site treated with the lotion containing free acids immediately dropped to a pH of 3.5 and was unable to re-balance itself over the six hour time period. In contrast, the site treated with SalSphere™ Clear Skin lotion remained in the skin-friendly range of 4.5 to 5.5 throughout the study.

Figure: Skin pH measurements over a six hour period following the application of a lotion containing SalSphere™ Clear Skin and a lotion containing the free acids. pH was measured using a Hanna® HI 99181 pH meter.

SalSphere™ Clear Skin slowly releases the functional ingredients onto the skin over time. By delivering SA and LA in a controlled manner, giving the skin time to rebalance its pH and not drop into a range that could cause irritation and dryness.

    Superior Skin Moisturization

After exfoliating, it is important to moisturize the newly revealed skin cells. A lotion containing SalSphere™ Clear Skin was compared to a lotion comprised of the free acids over four hours.

The results show that SalSphere™ Clear Skin increases the moisture content of skin for hours after application. Following the initial increase in moisture due to the lotion base itself, the SalSphere™ technology clearly outperforms the free, non-encapsulated acids. The free acids at this level do not impart any significant moisture to bare skin.
