The flower color of the (dyer) thistle is reminiscent of saffron, which explains its nickname false saffron. In the past, the safflower was cultivated to obtain the safflower-red dye carthamine, but today it is more for oil production. Even the Egyptians used the coloring properties of safflower to dye mummy cloths. The safflower grows quickly to its final height of up to 1.30 meters. Its leaves are thorny, its flower looks like a small basket from which up to 150 orange-yellow tubular flowers grow. The safflower oil is extracted from the seeds of the safflower , which consists of up to 40 percent fatty oil, by cold pressing .
