- Limitations
Do not shake varnish, stir gently before application, being careful not to introduce air bubbles into the varnish. To prevent premature failure, ensure correct amount of coating is applied using the coverage and mil thickness as stated. To insure proper performance and coverage, take care to apply coating evenly at proper mil thickness, even if it means applying an extra coat. DO NOT SPRAY without proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment). Avoid applying coating in direct sunlight or too much wind. A rapid loss of solvents will occur under these conditions and decrease the flowability. If container is not closed tightly, skin will form. Strain varnish through a paint strainer to ensure there is no contamination or skin left in the varnish.
- Surface Preparation
Wood must be clean, dry and properly prepared prior to varnishing. When sanding wood, always sand with the grain, use vacuum, air hose or tack rag to remove all traces of sanding residue. Follow all surface preparation steps carefully, avoiding shortcuts. Inadequate surface preparation will virtually assure inadequate varnish performance.
Bare wood: Sand surface completely smooth with 150-220 grit and wipe surface to remove residue with a tack rag or mineral spirit (oily wood: removing oil on surface will allow the varnish to penetrate for better adhesion). If using solvent, allow adequate drying time for solvent to completely dry out of the wood; dry time will depend on temperature. Apply at least 4 coats minimum of Captain Jack’s VARNISH. Let each coat dry overnight, sand with 180-220 grit sandpaper before each coat, sand with 320 grit sandpaper before the last coat. Clean off sanding residue with a tack rag before applying each coat.
For faster build-up, sand the wood with 80 grit sandpaper, apply 3 coats of Hawk Epoxy R1:C5 in one day (hot coated) and allow epoxy surface to cure over night, sand (180-220 grit) and clean. Apply 2 coats minimum of varnish and this process will provide you with a mirror-like finish in a shorter period of time.
Previously varnished wood IN GOOD CONDITION: Wipe old varnish with mineral spirit to be sure all dirt, wax, polish and grease has been removed. Sand surface with 180-220 grit paper and remove all dust with a tack rag. Apply 2 coats minimum of new varnish.
Previously varnished wood IN POOR CONDITION: If varnish is badly checked or peeling, remove finish to bare wood by sanding with 80 grit sandpaper. Proceed with the system for bare wood application.
