Over 75% of acetic anhydride is used in the manufacture of cellulose acetate which is in turn used in textiles, plastics, photographic film and a wide range of other applications. It also has a very important use in pharmaceuticals as a reagent, for example in the manufacture of paracetamol. Acetic anhydride is also used as a bleach activator which is used extensively in washing powder.
