SMA'RT® FermentDiol™ is the 100% natural and green version of 1,3-butylene glycol. It is obtained through the fermentation of sugarcane using white biotechnology. SMA'RT® FermentDiol™ can be used as a substitute for propylene glycol and other synthetic moisturizers. It can be used in a variety of cosmetics as a natural bio-based solvent, humectant, emollient, dispersant, preservative booster, and viscosity decreasing agent. When applied to the skin, SMA'RT® FermentDiol™ is absorbed and broken down into "gammahydroxybutryic acid," which is a naturally occurring compound found in humans. SMA'RT® FermentDiol™ is desired due to its silky sensory attribute, easy spreadability, and anti-irritation properties.
