- Product Background
The Ocimum basilicum basil is an herb in which the name is derived from the Greek “basilikon” which means “royal plant”. Originating in India, basil traveled to Europe via the Middle East and Egypt in particular. Today several varieties of it are used in both south-east Asian food traditions as well as in the dishes of many Mediterranean countries. As an essential oil, basil is split between two chemotypes, one which is predominantly linalool, and the other estragol (which classifies it as “tropical”). Cultivated as both a hardy and an annual plant, it has adapted to several different climates and is found in a number of countries.
