- Product Background
Geranium comes from the Greek “geranos”, meaning “crane”, in reference to the bird whose beak is the same straight, pointed shape as the fruit of the geranium. The Pelargonium genus originated in South Africa and includes almost 300 species, some of which are incorrectly named “geraniums”, but which differ from those of the eponymous Geranium genus. These fragrant geraniums, referred to as rose or sweetscented geraniums, are primarily cultivated in Egypt and China, but can also be found in other Mediterranean basin countries, such a Spain, Italy and Morocco. This essential oil has long been used in perfumes, playing a major role in fougere notes, and it also flavors many industrially-produced foods and drinks. It is used in aromatherapy for its antibacterial properties.
